Justin Duchscherer on Red Sox Radar

Justin Duchscherer began his pro career in the Red Sox organization, and Boston reportedly has some interest in bringing the injury-prone right-hander back to the fold in 2011.

According to a report on WEEI.com, the Red Sox have expressed interest in signing the free agent, who missed all of 2009 and pitched in only five games for Oakland this season due to a variety of injuries and a bout with depression. If he does end up in Boston, Duchscherer would be reunited with pitching coach Curt Young, who most recently served in that capacity for the A's.

Duchscherer was Boston's eighth-round draft pick in 1996 but was traded to the Rangers in 2001 for Doug Mirabelli. He made his big league debut later that year for Texas before establishing himself in the majors with Oakland in 2004.

Duchscherer, who turns 33 next week, has been very effective when healthy. He made the All-Star Game as a reliever in 2005 and again as a starter in 2008, his first year in the rotation in the majors. He posted a 2.89 ERA in five starts this season before leaving an April 29 start with a right hip injury. He underwent season-ending surgery about a month later.
