No one expects Derek Jeter to take the Yankees' first offer on a new contract, but the process has to begin sometime and apparently that is imminent. The Yankees will offer their shortstop a three-year, $45 million deal, according to SI.com. That jibes with previous speculation from the New York Post about the initial offer.
That $15 million per year average would be a significant pay cut for Jeter, who last made that "little" in 2003, at $14 million. He pulled in a cool $21 million last season as he wrapped up his 10-year, $189 million contract.
There already has been a good deal of saber-rattling when it comes to how to assign value to Jeter. His agent, Casey Close, told FanHouse shortly after the season that Jeter's impact on the Yankees "cannot be overstated," but the Yankees have tried hard to acknowledge Jeter's unique place in their organization with their desire not to let off-field factors play too big a role in how much he is paid.
