OXFORD, Ohio -- This is the stuff of Woody, Ara and Bo. You can't forget about Weeb, either. That's Weeb, as in Weeb Ewbank, the winning coach during The Greatest Game Ever Played when his Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants in 1958. He also was in charge of the New York Jets in 1969 along the way to Joe Namath's Super Bowl guarantee.
Anyway, I huddled with Ewbank's 104-year-old widow on Monday at her residence in town. She is strikingly alert, and with bright eyes, Lucy Ewbank thought of this ongoing miracle that is the Cradle of Coaches legacy at Miami (Ohio) University. It started even before her Class of '28 husband coached its basketball team in the late 1930s. Said Lucy, "I don't think Weeb ever saw this type of thing (with the coaches) happening and lasting as long as it has, but I think he hoped for it. You never know what's going to happen to you in a lifetime."
Or from season to season.
Which brings us to Michael, as in Haywood, the latest person on the verge of rocking the Cradle. If his RedHawks aren't the most inspiring story in college football this year, they are 1b.
Just last season, Miami won once, and that was barely, and it was against somebody nearly as brutal. But nobody was worse than those RedHawks, another rumbling, bumbling, stumbling bunch during the latter part of Miami's post-Ben Roethlisberger years through 2009. Not only did the RedHawks lead the nation in turnovers last year, they ranked among the meek in terms of despair and hopelessness.
