ORLANDO, Fla. -- Guard Jason Richardson may be having one of the better seasons of his career -- he's a 20-point-per-game scorer again -- but becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer really doesn't interest him.A contract extension does.
Richardson went into Thursday's game against the Magic as the leading scorer for the Phoenix Suns, still hoping that talks can proceed that will help him avoid the free agency that others -- like Carmelo Anthony in Denver -- are relishing.
"I'd love to get something done (with my contract), get it out of the way, so I don't have to do that this summer. That's my hope,'' Richardson told FanHouse Thursday night. "But nothing serious is being talked about at this point. A contract year can be a distraction, so I'd rather avoid that and just get something done.''
Richardson is in the final year of a contract paying him $14 million this season. The departure of forward Amar'e Stoudemire to New York this summer has enabled Richardson to become a bigger part of the offense, and he has taken advantage of the opportunity.
After his average dropped to 16.8 and 15.7 points the last two seasons, he has rekindled his scoring touch, averaging 20.3 points while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 44.3 percent from 3-point range.
