Paul Williams watched last Saturday night's one-sided unanimous decision victory by Manny Pacquiao over Antonio Margarito for the WBC's junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown, the fighter's eighth championship over as many weight divisions and his 13th consecutive win.But as he did, Williams couldn't help but reflect on the fact that he already had vanquished Margarito, this, following a July, 2007 unanimous decision that dethroned the Mexican-born Margarito as WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king.
This Saturday night in Atlantic City, Williams (39-1, 27 knockouts) will be motivated to perhaps out-do Pacquiao.
Williams has a rematch with WBC middleweight (160 pounds) champion Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs), the man against whom he earned a disputed majority decision in December during which both fighters were floored in the first round.
"This weekend's fight is going to have two guys in their fighting, and it's not going to be a one-sided fight. You're going to have some good moments in there from both guys, but I'm going to have a lot of good moments in there," said Williams, who, like Pacquiao (52-3-1, 38 KOs) and Martinez, is considered among the sport's premiere boxers, pound-for-pound.
"I would love to get a fight with Manny Pacquiao, you know? But I'm just going to go out there against Martinez and just put on a helluva show. I'm just going to go out there and go hard or go home, because Martinez has something that's motivating me," said Williams.
"Martinez has got them belts, you know what I'm saying? And I want those," said Williams. "I would love to have that green and gold belt around my waist, so I've got to go and get it. So all of the people, even if they're not my fans, they're going to get their money's worth."
