Melvin Guillard a Future Professional Golfer? Sure, Why Not

Filed under:

LAS VEGAS -- Melvin Guillard has his own way of doing things. Even normal things -- simple things, at least in the world of pro fighting -- quickly become a canvas for him to work on. Take Wednesday afternoon's UFC 132 open workouts, for instance.

Before stepping on the mats to show off his skills for media and fans, Guillard first stripped down to his underwear so that he could be lathered head to toe in...something. As he stood there in a ballroom at the MGM Grand with his eyes closed and arms out wide, getting oiled up in the middle of the afternoon as if there weren't a room full of strangers gawking at him, it was plain to see that this was not a man who spends all that much time worrying what people think about him.

If he was, he probably wouldn't have mentioned to reporters that his plans after he retires from professional fighting include playing on the PGA tour. As in, the golf one. And no, he's not joking.

"People laugh at me all the time," said Guillard, who claimed that, despite only playing golf for about a year, he now shoots in the 80s. "If y'all see my golf game you wouldn't be laughing, because I will smoke y'all out there."

Confidence, in case you couldn't already tell, is something Guillard has never lacked. He had it on season two of The Ultimate Fighter, back when he had more raw talent than polish. He had it through his up-and-down years after the show, when he'd mix flashes of fighting brilliance with almost pathologically self-sabotaging acts both in and out of the cage.

Now he finally seems to have pulled it all together, and with his current four-fight win streak comes a matching ego. So what if he's fighting Shane Roller on the Spike TV prelims of this card, and right after what would seem to be a much more high profile win over Evan Dunham in January? Regardless of where he may be in the pecking order at any given time, Guillard still has no problem declaring himself the best lightweight in the world.

"I can sit here and say that from my heart and from my soul," he said. "I know I'm the best 155er. I know when guys are scheduled to fight me, I know they don't want that fight. A lot of times, their managers probably go other routes of wanting to fight other guys. I'm the one guy that fighters right now don't want to fight, because this is my time. I'm at the peak of my career, and I'm not even in my prime yet. I just hit 28. I still haven't gotten old man strength yet. Right now, every fight's going to be tough, and I'm not knocking any fighter in my weight class, but I'm one tough dude, man. I've taken my beatings. I've taken my lashes. I've been knocked down. And I'll be damned if I'll let anybody knock me down again in my life."

But the fact that Guillard thinks so highly of his own skills only makes it more perplexing that he's one of the few UFC lightweights on a win streak who isn't clamoring for a title shot every time the mic gets passed his way. Not that he'd mind one, of course, but he admitted that he's almost purposely put those aspirations aside for the moment.

Instead, his focus is simple: he just wants to stick around.

"You see a lot of guys come and go," Guillard said. "They get cut all the time. I think a lot of guys are worried too much about title fights and winning belts. I care more about keeping my job and always being able to give you guys great fights. I always ask myself, how would I feel if a kid walked up to me and said, 'Hey when's your next fight in the UFC?' and I'm not in the UFC anymore. That's kind of heartbreaking as a person. You feel like a failure. I try my hardest to not worry about the hype and title fights and rankings. I just want to keep fighting, bring you guys great fights, and I treat every fight like a title fight."

Fighting a guy like Roller -- who was a good-but-not-great WEC lightweight before debuting in the UFC with a knockout of Thiago Tavares -- may not be the kind of fight that vaults a guy immediately into the title picture. It might even be a bout where he has more to lose than to gain.

But Guillard? He just wants to fight and keep fighting as often as possible, he said. Other people may worry about getting the title shot as soon as possible, but he isn't like other people.

Then again, most of us already knew that.

Thanks to His Hype Man, Motivation Never a Problem for UFC Champ Dominick Cruz

Filed under:

Dominick Cruz Mike EastonLAS VEGAS -- Before you ever see one of Dominick Cruz's workouts, you hear it.

More to the point, you hear Mike Easton, who is a little like MMA's version of the magical talking mirror in "Snow White." Only instead of telling you who's the fairest in the kingdom, Easton tells Cruz -- and anyone else within earshot -- who the baddest 135-pound man in the entire world is.

Better yet, Cruz never even has to ask in order to get the answer he wants to hear.

"Yeah, that's right!" Easton shouted as Cruz shadow-boxed himself into a sweat inside the MGM Grand on Wednesday afternoon. "He can't take you down! He ain't faster than you! He ain't ready for this!"

The way Cruz floats across the mat during these sessions, you can hardly tell if he's listening. But Easton -- a short, stocky bulldog of a man who looks a little like a fire hydrant that someone slapped a t-shirt on -- knows that he is. He also knows the value of what he provides the champ during the tough times.

"I'm his hype man," Easton explained. "Also his training partner, but his hype man too. Just like how Muhammad Ali always had somebody talking to him, that's what it is. You always need somebody in your corner that's going to talk you up. It makes you feel good."

It also, according to Cruz, makes you feel not quite so horrible during the necessary evil of the weight cut. That's why as he works to slim down to 135 pounds to defend his UFC bantamweight title against Urijah Faber at UFC 132 this Saturday night, he likes to have Easton right there, reminding him that this particular pain is only temporary.

"When you feel the weakest is when you're cutting weight," said Cruz. "It's very important to have someone in your ear, telling you how strong you are when you're feeling the weakest."

But even though it looks like the easiest job in any champion's entourage, it takes more than a big mouth to be a good hype man. You don't just walk in off the street, tell a guy how great he is, then get a free plane ticket to Vegas out of it.

First, you have to make your hype mean something. And the best way to do that, according to both Cruz and Easton, is to have a personal role in beating down the champ before you build him up. That's where Easton -- who is 10-1 as a pro himself -- really excels, said Cruz.

"Mike Easton's my hype man, but on top of that, he's a sick fighter. The reason he can be my hype man is because I have respect for his fighting abilities. He understands the game. He understands what it takes to win."

A good hype man can even help you off the mats. As Cruz prepared to defend his WEC title against Scott Jorgensen last winter, it was Easton who stood off to the side during Cruz's pre-fight interviews and added a little emphasis behind each one of his answers.

Was Jorgensen ready for Cruz's speed and rhythm? Cruz shrugged at first. No, probably not, he told reporters.

"That's right he's not!" Easton shouted out from behind the media scrum. The effect it had on Cruz was visible and immediate.

Had Jorgensen really figured out his style, or was he just talking himself into thinking so? This time Cruz fired right back. Of course he was talking himself into it, said the champ.

"Yeah, he is!" shouted Easton. "He's got no idea!"

Suddenly, everyone in the room was feeling motivated. You could almost see reporters looking at one another and thinking, where can I get one of these hype men? Does he do parties?

But to hear Easton tell it, having a motivator in your corner isn't just a nice little perk -- it's downright necessary.

"You remind somebody what's going on in their life, what all the blood, sweat and tears are for," he said. "You do that, you'll have them ready to bite the back of a chair. I learned it from my father, actually. He's the same way. That's my hype man."

And even though Cruz gives no outward indication that he's enjoying it, he's come to rely on it, he said.

"The point of it is that, a lot of it, you're not even paying attention to it. But it's still there. It's still entering your subconscious. You can never overdo that. There's times when I'm focused on other things and not really paying attention to it, but it's still getting in there and jumbling around a little bit before it leaves."

Maybe the most amazing thing is that, no matter how much he hears the constant barrage of positivity coming out of Easton's mouth -- and, oh yes, it is constant and it is loud -- he never gets sick of it. He never feels like telling his hype man to take five and just sit quietly for a little while.

"I think everybody around me probably wants to say that sometimes," said Cruz. "That's without a doubt. But they're not the ones going in there and fighting. Until they are, they're going to have to deal with Mike Easton yelling."

Which is just fine by Easton. Whatever he can do to get the champ in fighting mode, he said, it's his pleasure. Even he has to shout himself hoarse before the weekend is over.

"That's my brother. My brother from another mother. He helps me out, so I help him out. He knows I can talk to him, so that's what I do. That's my job. That, and to beat the sh-t out of him."

Who Is Sergio Canales, Real Madrid Midfielder and Transfer Target for Aston Villa and Everton? (Video)

Sergio Canales, Real MadridAlso known as the Spanish Bieber (not for his singing style, we're told), Sergio Canales is a Real Madrid midfielder who has attracted the attention of several clubs including Aston Villa and Everton, which are both interested in taking the 20-year-old on loan.

Canales started his senior career with Racing Santander but his stay with the La Liga club was cut short when Real Madrid paid €6 million for his services. He scored six goals in 32 appearances with Racing but has yet to get off the mark for the Spanish giants, where he has struggled to secure playing time with Jose Mourinho's team.

By way of an introduction, here are five factoids (descriptions doubtless featuring varying degrees of accuracy) about Canales:

- "His coach says he reminds him of a young Rafael van der Vaart; others have likened him to Julen Guerrero, the Athletic Bilbao playmaker whose mania swept the country; some suggest he's like Guti.

"But fear not. Because if Canales has Guti's technique he doesn't have his supreme daftness. He should not be an unfulfilled promise like Guti or, hopefully, disappear like Guerrero. Because, as everyone keeps insisting, while many footballers are an empty warehouse with broken windows and a wonky chair, Canales has 'a fully furnished head'. Still only 18, outwardly timid, there's a look of early Luke Skywalker about him - a small spattering of spots, floppy blondish hair, slight, a little short to be a stormtrooper. Every day, gaggles of girls hang around Racing's training ground waiting for him but as he passes in his Peugeot 207, off to collect his girlfriend from school, ready for his economics lessons, preparing for his exams, Canales is not for turning. He doesn't have an agent, there are no tattoos, no piercing and not a glob of hair gel. He is, writes Alfredo Matilla, 'the son-in-law everyone mother wants'. (The Guardian)

- "Vision, precision, versatility and a stellar left foot best describe Sergio Canales. The youngster tends to play as a midfielder, but he can perform just as well as a striker or attacking midfielder. Born on 16 February 1991, Canales joined Racing's academy at a very early age. He soon gained notoriety for his vision and playmaking skills. Coach Juan Ramon Lopez Muñiz first noticed Canales in 2007/08, the same year in which he debuted against FC Honka in the UEFA Cup." (Real Madrid)

- "Affectionately known to his teammates as 'Peter Pan' (due to his youthful looks resembling the cartoon character) he joined his hometown club at the age of 9 in 2000, after being spotted playing for his local club C.D Augistinos as a young, sprightly midfielder. Such was his talent that at the age of 12 a last minute petition for a change of recipient meant that he was awarded the MVP (most valuable player) award in a local football tournament. His rapid progress continued as his country excelled at the under-17 European Championship winning the tournament in 2007, with his supreme performances being a source of much interest. After the European success he was then named player of the tournament at the Copa Atlantico - an unofficial Championship at under-18 level. With a precocious talent and CV to rival even the best young player, Canales' breakthrough came on the 18th September 2008 as a second half substitute in the 1-0 victory over Finnish side FC Honka in the UEFA cup. His league debut soon followed, 15 days later, ending in the same score-line at Osasuna's Estadio Reyno de Navarra." (A Different League)

- "Canales announced his arrival on the scene two seasons ago with a breakout campaign with Racing Santander, convincing Real to splash out a reported €6m on him. Whilst he initially arrived amidst much fanfare, a combination of injuries and competition for places has seen Canales relegated to virtually a reserve role, making only fifteen appearances in all competition for Los Blancos last season.

"Canales however is still regarded as one of Spain's top talents, and a move to another club and the prospect of regular first-team action could just be the spark to reignite his ailing career." (espnstar.com)

- "An attacking midfielder who can also play wide on the right, Canales sampled international success with Spain at the 2008 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Turkey before he had appeared at club level. A product of Racing's youth system, Canales made his debut for his home-town club as a substitute in a UEFA Cup first round tie against FC Honka Espoo on 18 September 2008.

"Made no Liga starts in 2008/09 but enhanced his already burgeoning reputation with six top-flight goals the following season, including both of his team's efforts in a 2-1 win at Sevilla FC." (Uefa.com)

- "Every once in a while, a young lad bursts on to the scene and reminds us all why we love the beautiful game; a player who can dribble without fear, tackle with courage and grab your attention for the full 90. This time around, Sergio Canales might just be that player." (Footy Factor)

In his own words:
"I'm not happy, but I'm not going to leave Madrid, only fight and work hard to get more opportunities," he is quoted as telling AS. "Playing in Madrid is complicated and I knew it would not be easy. I came with enthusiasm and was aware that playing for a big team is very complicated, because there are great players and competition is high. So I have to try to exploit all my opportunities.

"With the team and the coach I am very happy. I wish I had more minutes, but you have to work hard." (Goal.com)

And finally, a few clips of Canales in action:

Charles Oliveira's Win Over Nik Lentz Changed to No Contest

The result of Charles Oliveira vs. Nik Lentz is now officially a no contest.

The Pennsylvania state athletic commission on Wednesday determined that an illegal knee by Oliveira set up his submission win at this past Sunday's UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh.

"After review of the tape of this contest and after consultation with the referee the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission has ruled that the results of this match will be changed to a no-contest," Executive Director Gregory Sirb said in a statement provided to MMAFighting.com. "This change is a direct result from an accidental kick to the head by Mr. Oliveira to a grounded Mr. Lentz."

In the second round of the preliminary lightweight fight, Oliveira landed a knee to the head of a grounded Lentz and proceeded to tap out Lentz with a rear-naked choke at one minute and 48 seconds. The knee, while accidental, was clearly illegal and noticed by the live audience watching and the UFC commentators. However, there was no call from the one person who could have made a difference that night, the referee.

"All the other referees were jumping up, guys from the commission were jumping up, I was jumping up. A lot of people were wondering what was going on, why the fight wasn't being stopped, because it was so blatant," Lentz's coach Greg Nelson told MMAFighting.com Tuesday, adding that Lentz suffered an injury to his eye socket due to the knee.

Despite the controversial finish, the match was exciting enough that it was awarded Fight of the Night by the UFC and both fighters walked away each with a $50,000 bonus.

With the result change, Lentz (21-3-2) remains undefeated in his UFC run with five wins, a draw and a no contest. Meanwhile, Oliveira (14-1) will have to try again to bounce back from the first loss of his career last December against Jim Miller.

Video: Fabio Capello Attempts to Inspire David Haye to Victory ... Fails

Fabio CapelloWhile not quite in the same league as ice-cold Sven-Goran Eriksson, Fabio Capello is often criticised by members of the press for not showing enough passion (read: not being English enough).

Ofcourse this would be OK, if England performed well enough on the pitch but three years into his tenure the national team are still as frustratingly mediocre as ever.

So, how do you get the press back on your side?

Option one: Sweep away the old guard and replace them with new, hungry players who are capable of playing together as a team; win a major tournament - or atleast progress to the semi-finals; beat the Germans on penalties

Option two: stave of criticism by producing a cheesy video showing your support for boxer David Haye thus showing how passionate you are and how much you love Britain.

Video: Jose Mourinho Teases Andre Villas-Boas in Early Television Interview

Andre Villas-Boas and Jose MourinhoJose Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas used to be friends. In fact it was Mourinho who gave the new Chelsea manager one of his early breaks in football when he brought him in as a member of his back room staff at Porto.

And when Mourinho was made manager of Chelsea, Villas-Boas followed him to London.

However, the two reportedly fell out when Mourinho was in charge of Inter Milan, over Villas-Boas's managerial ambitions.

Yet, perhaps the problems in their relationship occurred earlier on ... if the below video is anything to go by.

Nate Marquardt's Coach Still Struggling With Questions, but Finding Few Answers

Filed under:

When Trevor Wittman heard the news, all he wanted was to disappear. For years he's worked with Nate Marquardt, honing his striking in Denver's Grudge Training Center, and he went to Pittsburgh with his fighter last week expecting to come home a winner in yet another big UFC fight.

Then on the day of the weigh-ins he found out that Marquardt had been pulled from the fight and fired from the UFC for the elevated testosterone levels that were a result of his hormone replacement therapy, and suddenly Wittman felt like he could barely stand to show his face around colleagues and competitors he's known for years.

"When it hit -- and I know Nate feels the same way -- but I can't tell you the feeling I had at the weigh-ins when this was happening," Wittman said. "I really felt like I wanted to go and put a hood over my head and walk out of there. There were spots where I was pushing myself to go back in the room and not answer calls from the press. I had to hide in the bushes, basically, all out of respect for Nate."

To Wittman, the issue of testosterone replacement isn't as complex as it is to some others. He sees it in terms of right and wrong, black and white. Either everyone should be allowed to see a doctor sanctioned by the UFC and the athletic commissions to address these issues, he said, or no one should be allowed to do it at all.

But using testosterone injections to artificially raise hormone levels from whatever point they're at in a person's body? That, Wittman said, is something he can't support even when the levels are dropping naturally and legitimately.

"To me, if your testosterone levels are getting lower over the years, that's normal. You're getting older. As you get older in this sport, it's common sense you're not going to have the same testosterone levels as a 21-year-old man. But the big disadvantage a 21-year-old has when he comes into this is the knowledge and experience.

"If you have a 21-year-old come into this with those naturally high testosterone levels, and then you've got an older fighter -- I'll just pick an age, say, 35 -- who has lower testosterone levels, the advantages of the older man are knowledge, experience. He's seen it in all different aspects. He's a veteran. To me, that's a huge disadvantage for the younger man. Yeah, he's going to be able to go, go, go. But that's his advantage. Let him have it. And let's outwork him. Let's beat him with our experience. But if we make a 35 or 40-year-old fighter as strong as a 21-year-old, to me, that's cutting corners."

In the case of Marquardt, Wittman knew his fighter was undergoing testosterone treatments. He didn't agree with it, he said, but he also didn't feel like it was his place to tell a veteran fighter how to conduct his career.

What's more, even though he felt like the testosterone use shouldn't have been allowed, technically -- at least if Marquardt could provide proof of his need for it and get his levels down to within a range acceptable by the commissions before each fight -- it was. Marquardt was attempting to follow the rules laid out by the commissions, Wittman said. That's why, in Marquardt's mind, it wasn't cheating at all.

"Nate Marquardt is a guy who's never been untruthful with me. Everything that he tells me, and everything he told me going into this fight and back before New Jersey, it's something that he truly believes in. He went and had his testosterone checked. And when I spoke to him about it, I could tell he really believes he'd done the right thing, because the doctors are telling him, 'Your levels are low. You need this. This is why you're tired. We'll give you this and you'll perform like you're young again.' Man, you start telling a guy that, he's going to believe you.

"His honesty from the beginning -- doing these tests, asking for permission to do this -- that's what hurt him. His honesty got him put in this situation. It's so hard to watch one of the most honest guys I've ever trained -- the biggest family man, the guy who signs every autograph -- get scolded and cut and lose his career and get this brand on him, all because he felt like he was doing the right thing."

Now Wittman's fear is that the "brand" is not just on Marquardt, but also on his gym. He's never advocated use of hormone replacement therapy, he said, but by not doing more to dissuade his fighters from it, he can't help but wonder if he's not complicit in it.

"I didn't get into it. I kind of put my earplugs in," Wittman said. "I look at it as white and black, like you're still doing an enhancing kind of thing. But if the doctor okays it, does that make it right? I don't know. That's something I can't explain, but I'll tell you what I'm doing now, and that's sit down with every fighter I deal with and find out if they're seeing a doctor and for what reason. If it's anything that has to do with enhancing, then I'm going to step away."

Maybe the worst part, according to Wittman, is that as far as he can tell, the hormones and injections don't make that much of a difference on fight night. He thinks it's more of a mental aid than a physical one, he said, and when he sees fighters trying to become experts at it, he can't help but think back to boxer Verno Phillips, who used to drop weight by eating two mangoes a day.

At the end of the day, Wittman said, you still have to fight the fight, and a few nanograms per deciliter of testosterone rarely has the final say on the outcome.

"I don't care what you put in your system. I don't care who you hire to do your nutrition. It comes down to, you got two men in the ring. You might break your hand in there. Well, you've got to overcome the broken hand. You might have a bad weight cut and you still have to get the last five pounds off, even if it's unhealthy. I don't care. Those are excuses that go out the window the moment the close the cage door. You might have the flu a week and a half before. Fine. This is the fight game. This is what you deal with. You deal with injuries. You deal with illness. You deal with getting older. That's the game."

Jake Shields, Jake Ellenberger Will Headline UFC Fight Night 25 in New Orleans

Filed under:

A pair of Jakes will battle on the bayou in September.

MMA Fighting was first to report Sunday a planned fall welterweight fight between former title challenger Jake Shields and surging contender Jake Ellenberger. Tuesday, UFC officials announced the fight will headline UFC Fight Night 25: Battle on the Bayou on Sept. 17 in New Orleans.

Despite some reports to the contrary, a UFC official on Tuesday told MMA Fighting that the fight will be a three-round main event, not five rounds. Earlier this month at UFC 131, UFC president Dana White announced that all main events in the UFC would be five-round fights, including non-title fights. It was not immediately clear why Shields-Ellenberger will be a three-round main event.

Shields (26-5-1, 1-1 UFC) is coming off his first loss in in six and a half years, a unanimous decision setback to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129 in April. Ellenberger (25-5, 4-1 UFC) fought on the same card, knocking out Sean Pierson in the first round for his fourth straight victory.

Fight Night 25 will be the UFC's first trip to New Orleans in more than a decade. In April, the promotion announced a renewed sponsorship deal with Bud Light, and as part of the deal the two companies will produce an annual live event.

The first joint venture, "Battle on the Bayou," will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and is expected to include fan expo-like events, a concert tie-in and meet-and-greets with Zuffa fighters. As with all UFC Fight Night cards, Fight Night 25's main card will air live on Spike TV.

The UFC has held three shows in New Orleans, all prior to Zuffa's purchase of the company in 2001. The last UFC show in Louisiana was UFC 37 in May 2002 in Bossier City, near Shreveport. Several UFC fighters hail from the New Orleans area, most notably Pat Barry, Melvin Guillard and Alan Belcher, who trains in nearby Biloxi, Miss.

Belcher is expected to fight on the card in a middleweight bout against Jason MacDonald. Also confirmed by the UFC for the card is a middleweight bout between Season 11 winner of "The Ultimate Fighter" Court McGee and Dongi Yang and a featherweight bout between Season 12 TUF winner Jonathan Brookins and Erik Koch.

Why Kenny Dalglish Refuses to Panic Over Liverpool's Slow Transfer Progress

Liverpool manager Kenny DalglishWell this is not quite going according to plan is it?

After ther £16m acquisition of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland a fortnight ago, a section of Liverpool's fans expected even more signings to come in thick and fast.

The theory went that Liverpool should spend big, buy quickly and get a settled and confident squad in place for a positive pre-season from which Kenny Dalglish could start to build the side that would return Liverpool to the top four next season.

But it is not quite working out as Liverpool's supporters had hoped.

The club have been pipped at the post for Phil Jones, who joined Manchester United earlier this month, as well as Connor Wickham who is now on his way to Sunderland after Ipswich Town agreed a £12m fee and further deals for Blackpool's Charlie Adam and Aston Villa's Stewart Downing are also taking longer than anticipated.

On top of that, attempts to bring in left-back cover in the guise of either Jose Enrique and Gael Clichy appears to have cooled.
So is it time for Liverpool's plans to panic?

In a word: no.

Dalglish, alongside director of football Damien Comolli, have set two golden rules since Dalglish returned in January and they are that firstly Liverpool's squad does not need a massive overhaul and secondly that any business will be done at their pace and at their convenience.

Other clubs would have baulked at Blackpool's delaying tactics over Adam and offered an open chequebook just to get the deal completed or would have entered a financial battle with Sunderland for Wickham's signature but Liverpool are refusing to do that.

Some may say they paid over the odds for Henderson and although he is a gamble at least he has Premier League experience unlike teenager Wickham.

As far as Dalglish and Comolli are concerned it is a case of taking things steady, conducting business calmly and making sure the players who do come in help to aide and assist those already at Anfield.

If that takes until the clock is ticking down on the transfer window then so be it.

That may make for uncomfortable reading for Liverpool fans desperate for marquee signings but Dalglish and Comolli should be trusted - and respected - for not being strong-armed into conducting any frantic transfer action.

And if Liverpool's fans want prove of that patience they only have to remind themselves of Dalglish's words back in May before the transfer window even appeared on the horizon.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "The squad only needs tinkering.

"If people want to see the best players and assets of the football club wearing a red shirt, that's what we want to try and provide.

"We want to get the highest quality of player in that we can. That's what position we have been put into, and that's what we will try to do.

"Whether it is massively or cheaply, it doesn't make any difference as long as you spend well.

"Budgets are all very well and good but it doesn't guarantee you anything.

"Like every other club there will be movement in and out and I am sure there will be plenty of speculation - some we might even recognise the names of.

"We will be doing business but the better we do the business the more successful we will be."

Why Blackburn Are Struggling to Convince Targets to Sign for the Rovers

Roma forward Mirko VucinicThis summer was meant to be the time when the Venky's vision for Blackburn Rovers finally got off the ground but, just over one month into the close-season, and it has hardly been lift off at Ewood Park.

There is still no sign of new big-name captures that had been promised by the Indian-based owners upon their arrival in the boardroom last December.

And instead of buying new talent, Blackburn manager Steve Kean has already seen one of his own depart and now looks set to lose other prized assets.

Phil Jones, one of the youth products whom Blackburn were desperate to keep hold of, had no hesitation in jumping ship to join Manchester United in a £16 million move earlier this month.

Now it looks like Chris Samba will be the next to leave, with Tottenham and Arsenal believed to be keen on signing the influential captain.

And there is still no sign of highly-rated winger Junior Hoilett signing a new long-term contract, despite Kean jetting out to Canada for talks over extending his current deal.

But if those at Ewood Park were becoming increasingly frustrated at what will be left, they will be even more concerned at this statement from a potential player they were keen on bringing in.

Following Blackburn's reported interest in Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, his representative immediately shot down the prospect of the £18 million-rated Roma striker joining Blackburn for next season in no uncertain terms.

Alessandro Lucci told Sky Italia: "The Blackburn transfer is just a rumour. It is a respectable club, but I think Mirko deserves a more prestigious club."

And those words just sum up the current problems for Blackburn as they fight to avoid heading into the new season with an inferior squad to the one that finished the last one.

Because it appears no amount of money will be enough to tempt a big-name summer signing Kean so craves for.

And if landing a 'marquee' signing is proving a tough enough ask, securing a potential squad player is hardly plain sailing for a club that secured their Premier League survival by the skin of their teeth last season.

Sebastian Larsson has already decided to shun their long-term interest to sign for Sunderland ona free transfer.

This comes on the back of discovering Jermaine Jones, the American midfielder who spent the last few months of the season on loan at Blackburn, could now turn down a permanent move as a host of European clubs eye his signature.

This only proves that despite being no more than 40 miles up from road from the big two in Manchester, the Lancashire club are light years away from competing with the elite on and off the pitch.

Remaining at the mercy of the big clubs who target their players can't be helped, but their failure to replace them certainly can be.

The only saving grace for the Rovers supporters is that there has been no rash forecast of late from the much-maligned owners.

The Venky's talked boldly about progressing the club to a new level and predicted they would soon be challenging for the Champions League.

But if they do not act fast in the transfer market this summer they will be in real danger of fulfilling their pledge of taking Blackburn to a new level this time next year - and that's Championship football.

Nate Marquardt Incident Highlights Need for Comprehensive HRT Policy in MMA

Filed under:

If you have to do a live interview where you answer questions about the testosterone injections that cost you your job -- and, ideally, you'd probably rather avoid that situation altogether if possible -- the way Nate Marquardt did it is probably the best way.

In his interview with Ariel Helwani on Tuesday's edition of The MMA Hour, Marquardt was open and direct about his hormone replacement therapy (HRT, if you're down with the lingo). He explained what he did, when he did it, and why. He appeared emotional, vulnerable, and -- as far as we could tell -- honest.

Even the people who wanted to string him up the moment they heard UFC president Dana White say he was "disgusted" with Marquardt must have at least considered putting down the torches and pitchforks when they heard his side of it.

But even with all the questions Marquardt answered in the hour-long interview, the one that still bugs me is the one we may never be able to pin down: does any of this make Marquardt a cheater, or does it simply make him unlucky?

At least in the eyes of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission, receiving testosterone injections is not, in and of itself, cheating. If you can prove (to the satisfaction of the commission) that you need it, and if you can make sure your hormone levels fall within a pre-determined range by the day before the fight, it's really no problem at all.

In fact, if Marquardt had managed to hit that range -- and by all accounts, he just missed it -- the fight would have gone on, he'd still have a job, and none of us would have ever known that he was getting a little hormonal help on the side.

If that's the case, then the difference between illegally using performance-enhancing drugs and competing entirely on the up-and-up is a matter of degrees. It's a difference of a few nanograms per deciliter. It's less about what you're doing, and more about how much of it you're doing.

Marquardt knew those were the rules when he decided to play this particular game, and now he's suffering the consequences of failing to abide by them. But maybe what we should really be asking is if these rules are all that fair to begin with.

There's a reason you can't compete with too much testosterone in your system. It's a performance-enhancing drug. It's one that the body produces naturally, but it's also a powerful substance than can change your whole personality in the right (or, depending on the personality you started with, wrong) doses.

In fact, that's one of the reasons Marquardt said he needed it. He was tired and grumpy all the time, to the point where his wife didn't want to be around him, he said. So he went to the doctor, got a prescription for testosterone, and presto chango, he's a changed man. No more fatigue. No more irritability. Just full speed ahead.

That, by definition, makes it a performance-enhancer. But it doesn't make it cheating, apparently. Not unless you do just a tad too much of it, and then it's scorched earth for you, my friend. Then you're pulled from the main event, fired from your job, and verbally blasted on national TV by your boss, who will claim to be "disgusted" by you for engaging in a practice that he was totally fine with just a few months ago, and would have been totally fine with again if only your hormone levels had dropped just a wee bit faster.

Am I the only who feels like this makes absolutely no sense?

The problem with hormone replacement therapy for pro fighters is that athletic commissions haven't really made up their minds about it yet. That much was clear when Chael Sonnen went before the California State Athletic Commission to make his case for an after-the-fact therapeutic-use exemption for testosterone.

The commission agreed that firmer, more coherent policies on HRT were absolutely necessary, then it took no clear action to make any of that happen. Instead, it decided that Sonnen had failed to give proper notice to the right people at the right times. It nailed him on a paperwork issue, more or less. As for whether he should have been mainlining testosterone to begin with? That one they weren't about to touch.

The fact that Sonnen was still being offered an Ultimate Fighter coaching job after that incident while Marquardt and his camp got to find out via Twitter that he'd been fired from the UFC altogether, that tells us where the UFC's concern really lies in this discussion.

If you get in trouble after an event -- that is, after the UFC has already made its money off you -- then your hormones are your problem. The fines, the suspensions, that's between you and the athletic commission once the fight's over.

But if those same exact hormones get you pulled from a main event the day before it's supposed to go down -- that is, after the UFC has done the work of promoting the fight but before it has reaped the lion's share of the profits -- then brother, look out. Then it won't matter that you told the UFC about it months beforehand, or that you tried to go about it in the most transparent possible way.

If that's how the UFC wants to play it, that's the UFC's choice. Whenever the issue of drug testing comes up, it can -- and usually will -- step back and let the commissions take the flack. It will also make its hiring and firing decisions based on financial considerations first, and everything else a distant second.

But while the UFC's main concern is profit, the commissions are supposed to be the ones ensuring fairness. Right now the commissions seem to think that letting one fighter artificially raise his natural testosterone levels is fair -- as long as he gets a doctor's note first, and as long as he keeps those levels below at a certain point.

Whether that's a version of fair play we agree with, or one we truly want to hold our athletes to, that's something this sport has yet to decide.

Copa America Will Be A Test For Mano Menezes's New Look Brazil

Filed under:

Lionel MessiOn Sunday, the Copa America kicks off in Argentina. The surprising thing being that not until the final, on July 24th, will any game be played in Buenos Aires, the heart surely of the Argentine game with it's famous stadia. Brazil, with what should be a non too taxing game against an admittedly improved Venezuela, open the show in La Plata. With a largely rebuilt team which, under the new aegus of 49 year old Mano Menezes, now have a much more relaxed and adventurous approach to the game than they did under the counter attacking caution of Dunga.

Argentina kick off on Friday, like Brazil, in La Plata, against Bolivia, never the same team away from the dizzying, breathless heights of 9000 feet La Paz; where they humiliated Argentina in a World Cup qualifier not so long ago. Lionel Messi, renowned as the best player in the world but never the same with Argentina as with Barcelona, will be there.

Carlos Tevez
, dramatically, almost wasn't. Despite his prolific scoring season with Manchester City, he was originally omitted from the squad by Sergio Batista, once himself an accomplished midfield international. Tevez is perfectly fit, but the word is that Batista hasn't forgiven him for supposedly ducking out of a match against Brazil on spurious grounds of injury. Absent, too, is another attacking star in Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, son in law of Diego Maradona, explosive and contentious predecessor to Batista. Whose insistence that there are "more appropriate players for his position than Tevez" makes scant sense. But he's brought back Inter's 38 year old right back Javier Zanetti!

Brazil badly need these games as they are limited to nothing but friendlies till they play host to the 2014 World Cup. For which they are supposedly making alarmingly slow progress in new stadia and in aerial communications. In this tournament, they must hope that the highly promising 20-year-old playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso, internationally inexperienced, is fit enough to make the bullets for the highly gifted but volatile 19-year-old Neymar, his Santos club mate, to fire. The recent pictures of Neymar energetically kicking a grounded Penarol opponent during the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Final may deter those European including Chelsea, who want him.

TUF 13 Champ Tony Ferguson Back to Lightweight, Fights Aaron Riley at UFC 135

Tony Ferguson, who won Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" earlier this month, already has his next fight.

Ferguson, who beat Ramsey Nijem at the TUF 13 Finale in Las Vegas on June 4 with a first-round knockout, will face Aaron Riley in a lightweight bout at UFC 135 on Sept. 24 in Denver. The UFC announced the fight booking on Twitter on Monday night.

Ferguson (11-2, 1-0 UFC) has won four straight fights, including his UFC debut victory over Nijem, which also netted him a $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus to go along with his guaranteed UFC contract. That fight was at welterweight. Against Riley (30-12-1, 3-4 UFC), Ferguson will return to the lightweight division.

On Season 13 of TUF, Ferguson fought for coach Brock Lesnar's team. The three wins Ferguson had in the TUF house to reach the live finale were all knockouts or TKOs. Those those three fights are not official, if counted he has seven straight TKO or KO victories. After taping for the season finished, Ferguson trained at Lesnar's Death Clutch camp in Minnesota to prepare for his fight with Nijem.

Riley has been out of action for more than a year, since a unanimous decision win over Joe Brammer at UFC 114 in May 2010. Riley, an Indiana native, was expected to return at UFC 119 in Indianapolis last September, but pulled out of his fight with Pat Audinwood with an injury. When he returns in September, it will be after a 16-month layoff.

Riley, whose primary training home is with Greg Jackson's camp in Albuquerque, N.M., is in his third stint with the UFC. He was one-and-done with losses to Robbie Lawler at UFC 37 and Spencer Fisher at Fight Night 3. Since returning at UFC 91, Riley has gone 3-2, but hasn't put together consecutive wins. His three wins have all been by unanimous decision.

UFC 135 will take place at the Pepsi Center in Denver. It will be the promotion's first trip to Colorado since the first UFC on Versus event in March 2010, which took place in the north Denver suburb of Broomfield. The UFC hasn't been to Denver proper since UFC: The Ultimate Ultimate in December 1995. UFC 1 and UFC 2 also took place in Denver.

UFC 135 is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones, making his first defense, and former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Also on the card, Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes will face former lightweight title challenger Diego Sanchez.

Sir Alex Continues Summer Spending With Bold De Gea Move Confirmed

David De GeaAs he got up to leave a press conference that had wound down with questions about Edwin van der Sar's replacement, Sir Alex Ferguson paused and joked: "You'll never guess who it will be."

In truth, De Gea, 20, had been on the long list that had been bandied about for months as United considered what they would do once Van der Sar called it a day and now he has finally completed his move to England in a deal worth a reported £18.3 million.

There was also Manuel Neuer, Maarten Stekelenberg, Igor Akinfeev and Hugo Lloris, as well as Gianluigi Buffon and even Pepe Reina.

Playing in goal for United is a peculiar life, demanding total concentration, organisation, excellent distribution and character.

So, given all of the problems he has experienced with goalkeepers in the past, it has to be seen as a surprise that Ferguson has decided to plump for the inexperienced Spaniard, who has never played international football and has made just one appearance in the Champions League.

We all know about the problems Ferguson endured in the six years he took to replace Peter Schmeichel with Van der Sar, with the likes of Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Fabien Barthez, Roy Carroll and Tim Howard all trying and failing.

But De Gea, who will join up with United on July 11, will do well to bring the certainty that Ferguson's back four took for granted with Van der Sar.

The signing clearly hits the profile of players that United have looked to sign over recent years but goalkeepers are different and a fee of £18.3 million leaves no doubt that De Gea is coming to be number one from the start.

This is no £6 million on a 17-year-old. With Tomasz Kuszczak still expected to move on and Anders Lindegaard seen only as back-up, De Gea will be first choice.

That means that his fourth competitive game for United will be at the Reebok Stadium against the likes of Kevin Davies to be followed the week after by the pressure of facing Chelsea at Old Trafford.

In this position and in United's situation, there is no hiding place, no rotation and if this move goes to plan, De Gea could be number one for the next decade.

For all the doubts, it is hard to argue with De Gea's potential. He is already physically developed, standing at 6ft 4ins, and played a full campaign for Atletico last season.

He also helped Madrid come through a Europe League semi-final against Liverpool after breaking into the side in April 2010.

De Gea arrives at United on the back of winning the European under 21 Championships, conceding just two goals along the way and his time in Denmark, spent largely as a spectator as his team-mates played keep-ball, will have been good preparation for United.

It is a mark of De Gea's progress that just two years ago Atletico came close to sanctioning a loan move to Wigan.

"Atletico Madrid just felt he had to stay, and they were proved to be right," Latics manager Roberto Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

"Shortly afterwards, their two senior goalkeepers got injured, he got an opportunity and he quickly became a hero. And everyone has been able to see for themselves the true quality of David De Gea.

"We followed him for a long, long time, and we have always known how good he is.

"He has matured so much at such a young age, and the price tag Manchester United are talking about already looks to be a bargain."

Wimbledon Round-up: Maria Sharapova Books Sabine Lisicki Semi-final

maria sharapova, sabine lisicki, wimbledon, semi finals, championshipsRuthless Russian Maria Sharapova stormed into the Wimbledon semi-finals with a 6-1 6-1 win over Dominika Cibulkova to set up a date with wildcard entrant Sabine Lisicki on Thursday.

The 2004 champion needed just an hour to come through her clash as she crushed Cibulkova, who had ended top seed Caroline Wozniacki's hopes on Monday, and she is now regarded as the red-hot favourite to win the tournament.

Lisicki, a quarter-finalist here two years ago before a serious ankle injury, continued her remarkable run at Wimbledon after she sealed a spot in the semi-finals at the expense of Marion Bartoli under the SW19 Centre Court roof.

The German claimed a deserved 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-1 victory over France's Bartoli, who had ended Serena Williams' defence of her SW19 crown in the previous round on Monday, after fighting back from a second-set wobble in which she spurned three match points.

Petra Kvitova defeated Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-2 on Court One following a rain delay. She will play Victoria Azarenka, who defeated Tamira Paszek 6-3 6-1.

The day's opening match between Lisicki and Bartoli began with three consecutive breaks of serve but once the former had gained her second in game three, she rarely looked threaten in the first set and duly served out to seize the initiative.

There was little to choose between the pair in the second set but the 21-year-old German broke in game nine to leave her serving for a place in the semis.

However, she spurned three match points as the nerves began to take their toll and Bartoli broke back when the German double faulted for the first time in the match.

The Frenchwoman duly levelled the match by taking the tie-breaker with a drop shot, yet rather than kicking on Bartoli suddenly cut an exhausted figure and Lisicki raced into a 3-0 lead, breaking when the Frenchwoman herself double faulted.

Bartoli netted to hand Lisicki a second lead and a 5-1 advantage and there was to be no repeat of her second-set stage fright as she wrapped up the contest with her fourth and final match point.
