Notebook: Mary Joe Fernandez Blunders Away Fed Cup Title Shot

I've heard about all I can take about U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez' bold move. Her gutsy move that just didn't quite work out. The phrase we should be looking for is this:

Boneheaded move.

Desperate move.

Reckless, panicky move.

Fernandez benched experienced and higher rated Melanie Oudin in favor of American tennis prospect Coco Vandeweghe, ranked No. 114, this past weekend in San Diego, where the U.S. team lost to Italy in the finals.

The job of a coach, a mentor, a leader is to put people in the best possible position to succeed, especially a young person. The job isn't to take some kid and throw her in way over her head where she'll be crushed twice and left crying on court.
