NEW YORK -- The tennis world will hold its collective breath as the calendar turns to a new year, hoping that Venus Williams, one of the game's all-time greatest players, will be healthy enough to compete in the Australian Open in January.Say what you will, but it's a reality that women's tennis is not the same without either Venus or her sister Serena active and in the draw.
Prior to September's U.S. Open, Williams was bothered by a knee injury which ultimately shortened her season, limiting her to just nine tournaments on the year. In fact, she participated in just one tournament in the second half of the 2010 season -- The U.S. Open.
"I'm doing better," Williams told FanHouse regarding her knee.
But she admits that she's not quite where she needs to be.
