UFC 129: Vladimir Matyushenko Knocks Out Jason Brilz in 20 Seconds

Vladimir Matyushenko defeated Jason Brilz at UFC 129.Jason Brilz waited 11 months to return to the Octagon after losing a razor-close split decision in his last bout. This time he lasted just 20 seconds before Vladimir Matyushenko knocked him out at UFC 129.

Brilz had gained a great deal of attention from UFC fans for the way he handled that tough decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in that bout in May of 2009, but this time around he simply had no answer for Matyushenko, who came out like a buzz saw from the start.

Matyushenko landed a right hand to Brilz's chin, followed by a left hand that sent Brilz backward to the canvas, and then three more right hands on the ground before Brilz went out.

West Brom 2 Aston Villa 1: Youssouf Mulumbu the Hero as Baggies Win

Peter OdemwingieYoussouf Mulumbu was the hero at The Hawthorns as 10-man West Brom came from behind to claim local bragging rights at the expense of Aston Villa and virtually guarantee Premier League football for next season.

Villa, who were once again without manager Gerard Houllier as he continues his recovery from a heart scare at home, had taken the lead via Abdoulaye Meite's early own goal only for Peter Odemwingie to level for Roy Hodgson's team with his 14th goal of the season.

The game appeared to have turned in Villa's favour when Paul Scharner was sent off
but it was Mulumbu who had the final say with a cool finish late on as the Baggies, who have lost just once since Hodgson's arrival, leapfrogged their local rivals to reach 43 points and go eight points clear of the drop zone with just nine left to play for.

Villa, meanwhile, remain on 41 and caretaker manager Gary McAllister will have been left wondering how his team failed to take anything from a game they largely dominated as they threw points away again - in total the figure now stands at 26.

It took just four minutes for the visitors to go ahead, although they had West Brom largely to thank, after Meite stuck out a leg in a bid to clear Stewart Downing's low cross from the right only to calamitously stab it into his own net.

The goal unsettled the Baggies, particularly goalkeeper Scott Carson who had to gather what looked a straightforward drive from Stiliyan Petrov at the second attempt just as Darren Bent was poised to pounce.

It took the Baggies until the 19th minute to threaten, with Mulumbu's curling 25-yarder forcing Brad Friedel to dive to his left to turn it around the post before Carlos Vela spurned a glorious opportunity when he chipped over with just the Villa goalkeeper to beat after being threaded through superbly by Simon Cox.

The second half was a far more entertaining affair and, having seen Scharner spurn one headed opportunity, the Baggies gained a deserved leveller on the hour mark when Jonas Olsson headed James Morrison's free-kick back across goal and Odemwingie eventually hooked home from close range.

Suddenly, the momentum was with the home side but the wind was soon taken from their sails when Scharner picked up his second caution for a mindless shirt tug on Stiliyan Petrov in midfield, having earlier been booked for a poor challenge on Nigel Reo-Coker.

Inevitably, Villa regained control and it took a fine last-ditch block from Morrison to deny Gabriel Agbonlahor, while Scott Carson did well to tip a Downing drive around the post as the Baggies' rearguard held firm.

And Villa paid for their profligacy when with just six minutes left on the clock Cox sent Mulumbu through and he seased past James Collins before flicking over Friedel despite a despairing lunge from Ciaran Clark.

REACTION:
Hodgson declared his team safe after clinching another three points despite the absence of a number of key players:
"It's fantastic to have achieved our major goal of keeping West Brom in the Premier League for successive seasons. We were unfortunately weakened.

"If there was any game where people would have understood if we had lost it would have been this, so to actually have won is very satisfying. We broke a 26-year hoodoo which is very nice too."

On the importance of Odemwingie's goals:
"They have been vital. He has done extremely well. I still think he has a margin for improvement. He has scored some spectacular goals and some like Saturday's, which is the most important type of all."

On Scharner's red card:
"It was correct. I didn't see the first booking but the second was a counter-attack, he got caught the wrong side, he thinks there was a bit of a tussle but as a coach you half expect the yellow card."

On his players:
"I think they have exceeded everyone's expectations. They were on a poor run of form when I arrived, the crowd appeared to be losing patience, so they have probably exceeded their expectations more than mine."

A disappointed McAllister viewed the defeat as a missed opportunity for his side:
"I think it was an opportunity to grasp three points away from home against a local rival. We got in front but then we didn't defend the set-piece. When they had a man sent off it was a great chance, we sent on attacking players but then we got done with a sucker punch."

On the need for his attacking players to do more:
"We have got to go up a notch. Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Darren Bent have been in great form for club and country but they have to expect to be paid close attention by the opposition."

On Houllier:
"I spoke to Gerard before the game. He is great. I saw him on Friday, he is walking around now. Bearing in mind it is only 10 days since he suffered the illness, he was in great nick."

On the possibility of being pulled back into a survival scrap:
"I am still looking up the table. We have nine points to play for. We have Wigan next weekend and it's the only remaining chance we have to do the double over someone this year, which in itself is a disappointment."

WHAT IT MEANS:
While the table suggests West Brom still aren't quite safe, the reality is they now are - quite a triumph for Hodgson with three games still to go. The Baggies head coach has worked wonders in his short time at the Hawthorns and his team just don't know when they are beaten. A top-half finish is now a realistic ambition. It would still be a surprise if Villa were dragged back into a relegation fight but McAllister will be keen to win against Wigan next weekend to end any lingering concerns once and for all.

Arsenal v Man United Preview: Wayne Rooney and Reds Look Unstoppable

Wayne RooneyPREMIER LEAGUE: EMIRATES STADIUM, SUNDAY MAY 1, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1405 BST

Just a few weeks ago, Arsenal had it all worked out. They would beat United in front of their own fans to take control of the Premier League summit, having used a game in hand to draw within over-taking distance. Needless to say, it hasn't happened at all like that.

United will kick off at the Emirates Stadium nine points clear of their hosts, who know that 2010-11 will now be just another season that promised so much yet delivered so little. The Red Devils have the title in their sights and, in all probability, a trip to Wembley to contest the Champions League final as well.

United supporters can't wait to see what May brings them while Arsenal fans must once again rely on their memories for the good times when silverware was won on a regular basis. And if that doesn't work they can always book a ticket for the Emirates Cup pre-season tournament in July that should see Thierry Henry, now of the New York Red Bulls, return for a nostalgia fest, although the Frenchman, like the Gunners, isn't quite as good as he used to be ...

Key match-up: Johan Djourou v Wayne Rooney. Who can stop Rooney now he has rediscovered the form that has brought him 12 goals in 21 games since the start of 2011, the latest in the 2-0 win over Schalke in the Champions League semi-final first leg? Swiss international Djourou will try his hardest but won't want the sort of misfortune he suffered at Bolton last week, when a penalty was awarded against him that was softer than a marshmallow.

Form guide: The recent fortunes of the two sides could hardly be more contrasting. Since being knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona in March, the Gunners have managed to beat just one team - Blackpool. Defeats by United straight after the Nou Camp reverse and Bolton last week were the bread in a sandwich comprising the Bloomfield Road success and a string of draws, against West Bromwich, Blackburn, Liverpool and Tottenham. As for United, since being beaten first by Chelsea and then by Liverpool in early March, they have lost just once in 11 games in all competitions - the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City. They have won nine and drawn just one of the other games.

Odds: Arsenal 6/4, Manchester United 15/8, draw 9/4

Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp Needs to Look Back not Forward

Harry RedknappIt seems strange that after scoring eight goals in their last three league games that Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he is "chasing around the world" for a new striker.

You'd think that by conceding seven in those same three games that he would be combing the continent and beyond for a defender - or at least a defensive midfielder - to add a bit of steel to his side.

Redknapp has been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan and his name has cropped up again this week, following the Spurs manager's admission that the strikers on his books such as Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch have failed to meet expectations.

Forlan is out of the question due to wage demands according to Redknapp, who admitted: "I'd like to get another frontman, if I can. It's been one of those years. Normally Defoe would have had 18 goals by now (and) Crouchy hasn't scored many.
"We're still in it without the frontmen having scored the goals they should have done. But strikers are difficult to find. They're big money. We went for Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi last year and he was suddenly £35 million."

In the next breath Redknapp added he must trim the squad, concentrating on the likes of Jamie O'Hara and David Bentley, who are both out on loan. But what should be high on his summer list is a defender to stop goals going in at the other end.

They have let in more goals than any of the other teams in the top five of the league, meaning their goal difference is tantamount to Spurs being an extra point behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

Where they would be if they had a Patrick Vieira-style midfielder to break up play, or a gnarled centre-half who let nothing past him along the lines of Nemanja Vidic is anybody's guess.

But once the season is over and Redknapp wonders what might have been if they do miss out on the last Champions League place, he would do worse than chase around the world for a defender, rather than a striker. Plus, men for the back tend to be a lot cheaper.

Blackburn 1 Bolton 0: Martin Olsson Eases Rovers' Relegation Jitters

Martin OlssonMartin Olsson scored the only goal as Blackburn calmed their relegation fears with a first win in three months.

Victory was imperative for Steve Kean's side, with the visit of Bolton being followed by a trip to West Ham, a home game against Manchester United and a trip to Wolves on the final day.

The importance of the game was reflected in Blackburn's blistering start, with Olsson pulling David Wheater, playing out of position at right back, all over the place.

The young Swede laid on a decent opening for Benjani and also went close with a powerful effort
from just outside the area.

Owen Coyle had opted to use a host of fringe players at Ewood Park and the visitors' best chance came when Matt Taylor's free kick was headed on by Michel Salgado and Rodrigo stabbed a shot against the post.

But the hosts took the lead when Salgado picked out Olsson and he surged into space before drilling a shot into the bottom corner.

Olsson had another effort saved by Adam Bogdan shortly afterwards and after the break, Brett Emerton went close with a curling free kick.

Salgado went off on a stretcher in the closing stages and Steven Nzonzi just missed with a header as Bolton extended their miserable away record to 10 defeats in 11 games.

Millwall v Swansea Preview: Ex-Swan Jackett Dreaming of Play-off Spot

Kenny JackettCHAMPIONSHIP: THE NEW DEN, SATURDAY APRIL 30, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1500 BST

Swansea are already assured of a place in the play-offs, although it would take a miracle for them to achieve automatic promotion, and they will face no sterner test before that knock-out mini-tournament begins than their trip to the New Den.

Should Millwall win and Nottingham Forest fail to beat Scunthorpe then Kenny Jackett's side will join the Swans in the play-off slots with just one fixture remaining.

Indeed, Jackett, who led Swansea to promotion from the bottom division during his three-year spell in charge of the Welsh outfit has yet to lose against his former club.

It all adds up to potentially the most exciting fixture in the Championship this weekend.

Key match-up: Andros Townsend v Angel Rangel. Townsend, the on-loan Spurs winger is a lively presence on the left and also takes the free-kicks for the Lions. Rangel will be out to nullify his threat, in the knowledge that Millwall are also keen to sign him next season.

Form guide: Millwall, last season's League One play-off winners, have hit form just in time. They have won their last two matches and six of their last nine games overall, losing only one. Swansea have stumbled a little in recent weeks, with their 4-1 win over Ipswich on Monday only their second victory in their last six games, which saw them lose two and draw two.

Odds: Millwall 11/8, Swansea 2/1, draw 9/4.

MILLWALL:
Millwall's players are in fine form on the pitch and know they will be given enthusiastic backing from the New Den faithful, as winger Hamer Bouazza can testify.

The Algeria international's previous experience of English football was with Watford and Fulham but it was the Millwall experience that reminded him of home.

"I knew about the supporters before I signed," he told millwallfc.co.uk. "They have been amazing to play in front of every week. It is a club that prides itself on the atmosphere they create and since I have been here it reminds me of playing for Algeria and the atmosphere of international matches. It reminds me of being back home and that is a great thing to feel."

Strategy: Jackett has a good old-fashioned selection dilemma to ponder as Steve Morison, the Wales international striker and previous automatic choice up front, returns after a three-game ban at a time when Josh McQuoid and teenager John Marquis have been finding the net in his absence.

Last weekend, in the 4-0 thrashing of Preston, McQuoid was on target for the first time since joining in December from Bournemouth and the Northern Ireland international was keen to add more.

"When I first came here I had a stomach muscle injury then I came back and got an ankle injury so that set me back a bit," he said. I took my time to get in my stride but now I'm back and I'm fit and hopefully I will carry on playing.

"Obviously there is a bit of pressure on you when you come. The manager bought me and expected big things of me but all I could do was work hard in the gym, work hard to get fit and do my best when I come back.

"There was no pressure on me from the manager. He kept on talking to me and telling me to bide my time. I wasn't expecting to come here and score goals straight away anyway because it's a step up in league and there are good players there. I took my time and got back into the swing of things and now hopefully I can kick on from here."

Injury update: Neil Harris is banned and fellow forward Kevin Lisbie remains sidelined by an ankle injury but defender Alan Dunne (eye) and midfielder Liam Trotter (hip) could return. Craig Eastmond, the midfielder on loan from Arsenal, won't play again this season however after suffering a broken leg.

Dana White: Non-Title, Five-Round Fights in UFC's Immediate Future

Brock Lesnar TORONTO -- Five-round non-title fights are in the UFC's immediate future, UFC president Dana White said on Friday afternoon.

Until now, only championship fights have been five rounds, while all other fights have been three. The different structure would likely only be utilized for non-title main events, or other important bouts, like No. 1 contender fights.

Wigan v Everton Preview: Leighton Baines Aims to Add to Fears of Old Team

PREMIER LEAGUE: DW STADIUM, SATURDAY APRIL 30, 2011: KICK-OFF: 1500 BST

Six years after helping Wigan win promotion to the Premier League, Leighton Baines returns to his former club knowing that he can play a big role in sending them back down to the Championship.

Everton's England left back came through the youth ranks at Wigan, making more than 160 appearances for the club before a £6 million move to Goodison Park in August 2007.

But sentiment will go out of the window as Baines looks to hammer another nail into their relegation coffin.

A 15th league defeat will leave Wigan 270 minutes from relegation. Time, quite literally, is running out for Roberto Martinez's strugglers.

Although Wigan are back on home soil for the first time in a month, Everton are not the ideal opponents in times of a crisis.

David Moyes's team are anxious to put right the wrongs from last week's late defeat at Manchester United.

They looked like snatching a point at Old Trafford before Javier Hernandez pounced to all but end Everton's hopes of finishing above neighbours Liverpool.

Everton finished eighth on 61 points last season. With 47 points from 34 games, they will fall short of that total this time although they remain on course to finish higher up the table.

It sums up the rollercoaster season Moyes and his players have endured.

Key Match-up: Tom Cleverley v Phil Neville: Manchester United players past and present meet in a midfield showdown. Since joining on loan from Old Trafford back in August, Cleverley has been a rare positive in a bleak season for Wigan. However, the England under-21 international faces one of his toughest challenges of the campaign combating the threat and experience of Everton captain Neville.

Form Guide: It is home sweet home for Wigan. After three successive away games they return to familiar surroundings. Since losing 4-0 at home to Manchester United on February 26, Martinez's side are unbeaten in two at home. Everton, fresh from defeat at Old Trafford, have not lost back-to-back league games since November 2009.

Odds: Wigan 9/5, Everton 8/5, Draw 7/4

Negative Jose Mourinho Losing Cristiano Ronaldo as Well as Semi-final

Cristiano RonaldoThe tactics Jose Mourinho uses in the Champions League knockout stages couldn't be clearer: his team plays defensively to try to squeeze the life out of the opposition and if that doesn't work he switches to all-out attack.

On his own in the press conference afterwards.

Unsurprisingly, Uefa have reacted swiftly to his eloquent rant in the wake of Barcelona's 2-0 semi-final, first-leg victory in the Bernabeu, which saw his Real Madrid side reduced to 10 men with the game still goalless.

Mourinho more or less claimed the entire competition was fixed so Barcelona would win it, hinting that the Catalan club's shirt sponsors and Spanish football federation president Angel Maria Villar could all be part of his elaborate conspiracy theory.

"It's clear that against Barcelona you have no chance," the former Chelsea manager said. "I don't know if it's the publicity of Unicef, I don't know if it's because they are very nice, but they've got this power. I don't know if it's the friendship of Villar at Uefa, where he is vice-president."

Uefa have charged Real on five counts, with the Mourinho's rant just one of them. They have also been charged in relation to Pepe's sending off, Mourinho's own dismissal to the stands, supporters throwing missiles on the pitch and the pitch invasion that followed.

Uefa is also looking at the red card shown to Barca reserve keeper Jose Pinto at half-time in their 2-0 win and both cases will be heard by the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on 6 May.

Mourinho has already admitted his side stands little chance of reversing the score-line next week but his words were not the only significant ones uttered by a famous Portuguese after the final whistle on Wednesday night: Cristiano Ronaldo, the closest Real have to the genius of Lionel Messi, admitted he is unhappy with the way the team plays under the Special One.

Did the £80 million forward enjoy playing as a lone striker with little support in the biggest game of the season? "No, I don't like it but I have to adapt to what is asked of me," he declared dejectedly before adding "This is the way it is. We have a strategy.

"Being honest, it is true that we did not have a shot on target when it was 11 against 11 but 0-0 is not a bad result at home. We didn't play well but the game was under control."

All this suggests a parting of the ways is imminent and you would bet on it being the manager rather than the star player who goes. Just as he was at Chelsea, Mourinho was hired to win the Champions League and his negative tactics would therefore be tolerated just as long as that has a chance of happening.

Uefa already had their beady eyes on him this season, handing him a one-match ban after appearing to instruct Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos to be deliberately sent off against Ajax so they would serve a suspension before the knockout phase.

It's that sort of cynicism that enables Barca not so much to claim the moral high ground but rather to build a fort on it.

Heineken Cup Previews: Brian O'Driscoll Targets Repeat of 2009 Triumph

After toiling throughout the long Heineken Cup campaign, all roads now lead to the Millennium Stadium for the final next month. Just 80 minutes stand between English outfit Northampton Saints, Irish side Leinster and French duo Perpignan and Toulouse and a trip to the Welsh capital. Playing at neutral venues, the semi-finals promise to be tight affairs. Mistakes and moments of magic could make the difference now. But having progressed this far, nobody will want to come a cropper at such a late stage of the competition.

LEINSTER V TOULOUSE: AVIVA STADIUM, SATURDAY APRIL 30, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1530 BST

Leinster are so determined to repeat their glorious Heineken Cup victory of 2009 that captain Brian O'Driscoll is even snubbing the Royal wedding.

Once upon a time, defying the future King would have put O'Driscoll in the Tower of London but he is more interested in Saturday's game than any celebrations between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

He told the Guardian: "I have a captain's run on Friday and as big an honour as it was to be invited, I can't ask for team runs to be at 6pm.

"It's a small thing but waking up here, at home on Saturday morning, is really important. I'll be up early enough for breakfast and lounging around, watching Soccer AM.

"I'll make my usual lunch at 12.30. My missus knows to leave me alone. She won't be getting much chat out of me. And then it's off to the game."

And what a game in store. This match should be a classic between two sides who have played some captivating rugby this season.

Toulouse are the favourites simply because they are the four time winners of the competition and have beaten Leinster five times in the competition in the past.

The last time was the 26-16 semi-final win at Le Stadium a year ago and the French side will be hoping for more off the same 12 months on even if they are refusing to take the Irish province lightly.

Toulouse coach Guy Noves said: "This Leinster team is scary. It seems their training is a little stronger than last year and some players have strengthened their squad. I hope we raise our game to compete. We will try not to take a big hammering."

Toulouse top scorer Maxime Medard added: "They're one of the best teams in Europe. They have a fantastic back row and a very good scrum.

"They have experienced and talented players in every position so we'll have to pay attention for every minute - every second we're on the pitch."

Key quote: "In my opinion there are only a couple of teams in Europe that you could class as a complete side - and Leinster are one of those teams," - Toulouse back row forward Shaun Sowerby.

Key stat: Toulouse are appearing in their 10th Heineken Cup semi-final - a record and one more than former double winners Munster.

Key man: O'Driscoll (Leinster): He may not be as quick as he once was but do not underestimate 'BOD' who is still one of the most devastating talents in the world game.

Liverpool v Newcastle Preview: Carroll a Doubt for Reunion with Geordies

Andy CarrollPREMIER LEAGUE: ANFIELD, SUNDAY MAY 1, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1200 BST

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will welcome his former club Newcastle United to Anfield on Sunday hopeful that he can maintain the fine momentum that has ensured a Europa League spot is still a possibility.

With his fine record at Anfield during the 1980s and then his Premier League title winning exploits with Blackburn Rovers in 1995, it is easy to forget that Dalglish was also the manager of Newcastle between January 1997 and August 1998 during which he took them to the FA Cup final.

His reputation in the north-east is likely to have taken a nosedive after he played a huge part in convincing £35 million man Andy Carroll to swop St James' Park for Anfield in January and a victory over Alan Pardew's side would rub salt into those wounds.

Liverpool need a victory as well if they wish to catch Tottenham Hotspur for the fifth-placed spot and the European football that will come with it so Newcastle - who sit comfortably in 11th spot with 41 points - should expect an all-out assault from the home side.

Key Match-up: Luis Suarez v Mike Williamson. Williamson will have his hands full in this encounter because Suarez has been simply brilliant in recent weeks. Energetic, creative, enthusiastic and the new heartbeat of the Liverpool team. If Williamson can keep him quiet then Newcastle could snatch a result.

Form Guide: Liverpool go into the game having destroyed Alex McLeish's Birmingham City side last weekend and Dalglish has yet to taste defeat at Anfield since returning as manager. As for Newcastle, they gained a hard earned draw against Blackpool in their last match but they have won just five from 17 away fixtures this season.

Odds: Liverpool 4/9 Newcastle 13/2 Draw 10/3

A Series of Events This Week Have Shown Football at Its Very Worst

Real Madrid v BarcelonaHow distasteful the game of football can be. It inspires great deeds and great passions, as Barcelona and Manchester United showed us in the Champions League semi-finals. It can also, however, bring out the worst in such as Jose Mourinho, a small minority of Manchester City fans and those speculating about Gerard Houllier's successor at Aston Villa.

Mourinho's antics around his Real Madrid side's tie against Barcelona reached a new low. Those of us who have admired his managerial achievements were left sickened and saddened by his finger-pointing at all but himself for his side's 2-0 home defeat and embarrassed by our defence of his talents.

Now we are left to wonder whether the Emperor is in need of some new clothes. Where once he found inventive ways to overcome opponents, his limitations as a tactician, his side a brutal reflection of his lack of ideas for countering Lionel Messi and Barca, will scarcely have done his chances of a job back in England any good.

Owners and chairmen may be pragmatic enough to put up with the controversy if it brings trophies. If it just brings vilification, though, who needs the hassle?

Two nights earlier, we heard a section of Manchester City's support at Blackburn singing odious references to the Munich air disaster that befell their neighbours United. It came just 24 hours after a moving television drama about that fateful event in 1958.

If those City fans were dancing on graves, some have been metaphorically creating a tomb for Gerard Houllier and tripping the light fantastic across it. The man has been in hospital with a heart problem but it has not stopped the critics who never wanted him at Villa Park in the first place and never given him a chance.

Speculation is rife about who his successor might be, Rafael Benitez the latest name to be mentioned. It would be ironic; Benitez succeeded Houllier at Liverpool, too.

It is all unpleasantly premature. Houllier is on the road to recovery and has to be allowed to make his own decision about whether, or when, to return. I doubt the speculators would enjoy it much if they had a health scare and people talked openly about whether someone else should get their job.

Besides, the Villa owner Randy Lerner believes that Houllier has been doing a good job in modernising the club, improving training methods and rebalancing the squad to get better value for money ahead of a challenge for honours next season.

What can be done to silence the bitter voices of crass bad taste such as Mourinho, the Manchester City minority and Houllier's detractors? Nothing, and nor should anything be done. We live in a country of free speech. Let them damn themselves with their own voices.

Barcelona were no angels in the Bernabeu and some of United's support can be nasty too. Houllier has been known to have a go back at his critics as well. The instinct is always to respond when provoked - quite rightly on occasions in this game to get bullies to back down. The best policy over the next week, though, would surely be to rise above it all.

Next UFC Fan Expo Set for Oct. 7-8 in Houston

TORONTO - Not yet halfway through its first UFC Fan Expo in Canada, the promotion was ready to spring loose the early details on its next fan event.

UFC president Dana White announced Friday during a question-and-answer session with fans at the Toronto UFC Fan Expo that Houston will host one on Oct. 7-8. The promotion had not previously made any announcement for its next fan event.

The UFC has not yet made official a fight card for that weekend in Houston. Sources with the promotion could not yet confirm on Friday to MMA Fighting that the weekend will also play host to a pay-per-view. But all the other UFC Fan Expos have been lead-ins for pay-per-views, and the belief is that the Houston Fan Expo will be no different - possibly UFC 136.

Sunderland v Fulham Preview: Steve Bruce Scrapes the Barrel Up Front

Stephane Sessegnon (L) with Everton's Jack RodwellPREMIER LEAGUE: STADIUM OF LIGHT, SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1500 BST

It's been the hot topic of conversation on Wearside all week. Well, it would be, wouldn't it? Such is their interest, the players have even taken to Twitter to air their views on the potential candidates.

Jordan Henderson has been mentioned in despatches, so too, implausibly it seems, Anton Ferdinand, though more than one of his team-mates reckons he might not be up to it. David Meyler, the verbose Irishman, never one short of an opinion or two, has also had his say.

Of course, we're talking about who should play up front as Sunderland's emergency forward in the absence of any other remotely fit striker, right? Wrong.

Instead, the above is the gist of an on-line discussion by members of Steve Bruce's squad as to who is in line to appear as a guest vocalist/wrapper on Asamoah Gyan's next single release. Given the potential line-up, at this rate, it doesn't promise to be a classic.

Having joined the club's lengthy injury list with a hamstring strain that is likely to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign, the Ghanaian international is set to have plenty of time on his hands to devote extra attention to his budding music career, in addition to increasing his number of Twitter disciples.

Instead, it's poor old Bruce, the self-confessed technophobe who concedes he's more right-twit than re-tweet when it comes to his grasp of social media, who is faced with the dilemma of attempting to send out a strike-force with no strikers. Work that one out.

Although, having scored three goals in 11 minutes in the victory over Wigan without a recognised forward on the pitch to secure top flight safety, perhaps Bruce would be well served in sending his troops out in a novel 4-6-0 formation and seeing how they do.

For their part, scoring goals doesn't appear to be a problem for Fulham, given their three in midweek to easily see off Bolton and seal their return to the top half of the table, a place the hosts can re-claim from them with a victory that will see them leapfrog Mark Hughes' side.

QPR Face Potential Doomsday Scenario When FA Meet Next Week

Neil Warnock celebrates a draw at Cardiff on April 23On Monday, Queens Park Rangers supporters gathered on the Loftus Road pitch ready to celebrate promotion to the Premier League only to be informed that Norwich had scored a 96th-minute equaliser and therefore they would have to wait.

Of course, the fact that they had only drawn their own match with Hull City was another reason for the delay and now a side that has been at the top all season is starting to regret the dropping of points here and there.

For it is looking increasingly likely that Rangers will be punished with a points deduction for breaking rules on third-party ownership when they signed Alejandro Faurlin from an Argentinian club two years ago. It could be as many as 15 in fact, which would push them into the play-offs and, almost certainly, see Norwich and Cardiff promoted automatically instead.

As well as prompt the mother of all legal battles - which could even delay the play-offs themselves.

Rangers supporters have been hoping their club, which is owned by some of the richest men on the globe, would be hit only by a financial penalty, as West Ham were for the signing of Carlos Tevez, the scorer of a season-saving winner at Old Trafford on the final day of the 2006-07 season, when he was owned by a third party.

That relegated Sheffield United, who eventually also won millions in compensation and were managed by Neil Warnock, the current QPR manager, who inherited Faurlin as part of a squad that was going nowhere a little over a year ago.

The hearing into the Faurlin signing is to begin on Tuesday, when a four-man panel comprising an independent barrister, two members of the Football Associations's disciplinary panel and a 'football expert', who will be either a former player or coach.

And the early indications are that Rangers will not be able to hide behind the Tevez precedent, as then there were no set rules about third-party ownership. West ham had been guilty of failing to disclose the arrangement and regulations were drawn up subsequently so all clubs would know where they stood.

A report in The Sun quotes an 'FA source' who says "There's no question QPR have broken the rules. They know it as well. The only debate is what to do about it. If they aren't found guilty you might as well scrap the rules about third-party owners."

Rangers are currently five points clear at the top of the Championship table - and there aren't enough left to make it to the 15 needed to make sure they stay there.

It's about to get very messy.

Kid Yamamoto Out of UFC 130

Kid YamamotoLooking to get in the win column in the UFC for the first time, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto will have to wait a while longer.

The Japanese legend made his UFC debut in February, losing a unanimous decision against Demetrious Johnson in a fight "Mighty Mouse" dominated with takedowns. Yamamoto was expected to face Chris Cariaso at UFC 130 next month, but the UFC reported Wednesday an injury has forced him off the card.

Stepping in to fight Cariaso in the bantamweight bout will be Michael McDonald on less than five weeks notice. The fight is expected to take place as part of UFC 130's preliminary card.

Frank Warren Insists Fight Goes Ahead Despite Kevin Mitchell's Latest Problems

Filed under:

Kevin MitchellKevin Mitchell's run-in with the law is just yet another potential setback for the troubled Londoner and will no doubt distract him in the build-up to his July clash with British rival John Murray, which will still go ahead as planned.

Mitchell is currently on bail after being arrested, alongside his mother, on April 15 for alleged possession of drugs. He has been questioned by Dagenham Police but has not been charged.

Frank Warren, who promotes both Mitchell and Murray, insists their July date is still to go ahead despite Mitchell's arrest.

Warren said last week: "I've managed to get another domestic super fight off the ground. European lightweight champion John Murray will take on former world title challenger Kevin Mitchell in the summer, probably in July. It's a great fight and I'm really excited about it."

But the promoter will no doubt be feeling less excited about the domestic dust-up after Mitchell's most recent problem.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the promoter confirmed: "Kevin Mitchell has been arrested and released on Police bail, but has not been charged. Kevin Mitchell denies all charges, but has been asked to report back to Dagenham Police Station in June.

"His fight against John Murray is still due to take place in the summer, and a date will be announced shortly."

Warren was irked before with Mitchell after he complained that the Londoner was cutting corners before his big fight with Michael Katsidis last year, a bout he eventually went on to lose comprehensively after he was mauled for three rounds before the referee stepped in.

That sent Mitchell into depression and the 26-year-old openly admitted he spent more time in his local pubs than gym which further infuriated Warren who was looking to get his career back on course.

And when Warren finally got Mitchell on board to face Murray earlier this year, he pulled out and blamed the promoter for not offering him a significant enough purse.

Those in boxing were fearing the worst for the Dagenham boxer, but last month he finally put pen to paper on a deal to face Murray and fuelled the belief was his troubles were behind him.

But now his arrest has raised further questions over Mitchell and his focus on the sport, with the British Boxing Board of Control likely to be interested in the outcome of current proceedings.

Last year, the board revoked Ricky Hatton's boxing licence after the Manchester fighter was shown using cocaine by a national Sunday newspaper and could act if Mitchell is charged and convicted.

That would force Mitchell out of the summer clash with Murray and prolong an absence from the ring which now stretches over a year.

Murray would also be left reeling, as the undefeated 26-year-old has been itching to face his British rival and earn himself a world title shot.

But at the moment the fight goes ahead as planned, as no charges have yet to be brought against Mitchell who has to return to the police in June when the situation will become clearer.

Warren is set to announce the official date for the July match-up soon, and hopefully Mitchell's problems won't deny the once-promising Londoner an anticipated return.

Common Sense Prevails as Exeter Chiefs Docked Points by RFU

Hoani Tui Exeter Chiefs have been deducted two Premiership points and fined £5,000 for fielding too many overseas players and although Leeds Carnegie may beg to differ, the Rugby Football Union's (RFU) decision is just about right.

Many administration bodies often jump on transgressions by sports clubs as a chance to flex their muscles, "set an example" or "forge a precedent" so that their errors are not followed by others.

However, in this case, the RFU has it spot on.

Chiefs have faced sanction because they played with three overseas players when they lost 27-22 to Leeds at Headingley earlier this month.

Nemani Nadolo (Australia) was included alongside Hoani Tui (New Zealand) and Ignacio Mieres (Argentina). Nadolo, who is Fijian, used an Australian passport when he applied for a work visa at the start of they year because that was where he grew up.

As a Fijian, he would have been exempt from the Premiership's overseas rule so it is merely a case of a paperwork mishap rather than any malicious attempt by the Chiefs to gain a competitive edge.

A possible 10-point deduction could have been on the cards but the RFU have rightly acknowledged that that would be far too harsh a punishment for what amounts to an honest mistake.

The head of the RFU panel Judge Blackett said: "The panel accepted that there was no intention to gain advantage by selecting more than two foreign players in their matchday squad and that this was an internal administrative error involving a failure of the administrator to inform the playing side that the player was foreign.

"There is an increasing incidence of poor administration and a deterrent sanction is required to prevent further incidents.

"Administrative errors such as these are a serious breach of regulations and potentially undermine the integrity of the competition."

The Chiefs have also played their full part in ensuring they did not suffer a more draconian offence by being completely open and transparent in accepting they had made a mistake.

Unlike Harlequins, who brought such disgrace on themselves and the game of Rugby Union during the "Bloodgate" affair, by attempting to disguise their actions, the Chiefs have held their hands up from the very start and that is bound to have been viewed in a positive light.

Head Coach Rob Baxter told the Guardian recently: "It has been frustrating.

"We have worked very hard this season and I have already spoken to the players to apologise to them.

"Anything that means that points we have worked and fought hard for could get taken away from the club is very frustrating for them.

"It's nothing to do with the players at all. They have worked extremely hard and done everything we've asked them to do. Behind the scenes we've let them down a little bit.

"If you think that you play and work hard and you've got the club in a position where they are safe, and then someone comes along and says you might be getting a points deduction, but we don't quite know how much it will be, that is going to cause a small distraction."

So then, on this occasion, we have a sports team that knows it has done wrong and we have a governing body that has rightly accepted their apology and explanation.

And although bottom club Leeds would have liked to have seen more points taken off the Chiefs in order to extend their Premiership lifeline, the West Country side has received the punishment it deserves - and no more.
