Andy Roddick

Only a few weeks after retiring during his second-round match at the Shanghai Masters with a groin injury, Andy Roddick successfully returned to the court on Wednesday, defeating fellow American Sam Querrey 7-5, 7-6 (6) in the first round at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland.

The former world No. 1's refined all-around game gave him the advantage over the younger Querrey on Wednesday. Roddick served better than his hard-hitting compatriot, winning 89 percent of his first-serve points and generating 16 aces. Querrey also served well, winning 79 percent of his first-serve points, but was unable to put Roddick away and garner the all-important winners on the crucial points.

Roddick took control of the match by earning the only break of serve during the 12th game, claiming the opening set by the score of 7-5.

Both players held serve throughout the second set, but Querrey committed a costly unforced error while he had set point at 6-5 in the breaker. Roddick won two straight points following Querrey's gaffe to claim the match.
