The Spaniard failed to collect a right wing cross fromRonnie Stam in the 52nd minute, parrying it out into the path of Colombian Hugo Rodallega for him to power home from 12 yards.
If the early stages of this contest were anything to go by, Wigan were lucky to get something out of this match.
But on the evidence of the second half, few would have argued had they grabbed all three points.
Fernando Torres scored his fourth goal in as many matches in the seventh minute, latching onto a fantastic through ball from Steven Gerrard to coolly beat Ali Al Habsi.
Gerrard could have made it two in the 16th minute, but failed to find his feet when positioned around the penalty spot.
Wigan did not have a shot or header at goal until the 28th minute, and then Charles N'Zogbia had a goal disallowed for off-side. It was the start of a Wigan resurgence.
Rodallega's strike gave them real confidence, and they dominated until the last 20 minutes.
But Liverpool could also have won it when Gerrard struck the underside of the bar in the 70th minute.
