West Ham remain rooted to the bottom of the table after they put in a disorganised performance against a much-changed Blackpool.Blackpool manager Ian Holloway may have railed against questions why he had made wholesale changes in the midweek loss to Aston Villa. But he hardly did his argument that he was merely using his squad any credence at Upton Park as he fielded a completely different starting line-up to the one beaten on Wendesday.
Not that it would have mattered, as West Ham is likely to have struggled against any side Holloway may have chosen to put out.
It wasn't that the Hammers didn't enjoy any chances; they merely failed to take them. Luis Boa Morte could have scored on three minutes if he was sharper and similarly Pablo Barrera - an 18th-minute substitute for the perennial injured Kieron Dyer - should have done better with his effort three minutes before the break.
Both sides had cases for penalties in the first half after both Craig Cathcart and Scott Parker handled in their own areas, but referee Kevin Friend declined to stop play for either.
Two minutes into the second half, Parker put through a perfectly weighted ball for Boa Morte, but the unmarked winger scuffed his effort wide.
Blackpool had a goal harshly ruled out for offside on 70 minutes after former Hammer Marlon Harewood prodded the ball home, but the linesman flagged for offside against Luke Varney, who had not been active in the attack.
Then substitute Carlton Cole came close to scoring for the home side but his effort hit the post with replacement keeper Richard Kingson beaten.
Gary Taylor-Fletcher missed a sitter of his own for Blackpool after being put through by Matt Phillips, but he shinned the ball over the bar from five yards out.
Harewood also got in on the act of failing to convert easy chances when he shot wide from inside the six-yard box.
