Monfils, Djokovic Win as France, Serbia Split Day 1 Davis Cup Final

Filed under:

As expected, France and Serbia split their matches during opening day of the 2010 Davis Cup finals in Belgrade on Friday. Serbia is seeking their first ever Davis Cup title, while France is looking to win their 10th -- but the nation's first since 2001.

France started the day off strong with 12th-ranked Gael Monfils dominating Janko Tipsarevic 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-0 to give France an early 1-0 lead in the tie.

Monfils controlled play from the outset, as a nervous Tipsarevic started the match at home with two double faults. Monfils dominated the pace of play throughout the contest and will be fresh for action on Sunday, when he will most likely be pressed into duty for one of the final -- and possibly clinching -- matches.
