Ralph Friedgen Gets a Memorable Sendoff as Maryland Football Coach

WASHINGTON -- Ralph Friedgen was approached for the last week at Maryland's team hotel for the Military Bowl. Fans, well aware he would coach his final game for the Terrapins within days, asked him to pose for photos and sign autographs.

He obliged those requests, then went out and helped create one final memory to cap his 10-year run.

Maryland rumbled to a 51-20 rout of East Carolina at RFK Stadium on Wednesday. Bowl MVP Da'Rel Scott ran for 200 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman D.J. Adams rushed for four touchdowns.

Those details, however impressive, will soon fade. What will not is the departure of one of Maryland's most successful coaches -- and not by his own volition.

The school announced earlier this month it would buy out Friedgen at season's end. The man who took over a program with one bowl trip in 15 years departs with a 75-50 record and seven postseason appearances in a decade.
