Boxing: Ten Great British Performances that Stood Out in 2010

Filed under:

Carl Froch, BoxingAs the year draws to a close, we look at some of the best performances by British fighters in the ring in 2010:

CARL FROCH v Arthur Abraham - November

The Nottingham man was a wounded animal after he had his WBC super-middleweight belt taken from his grip earlier in the year by Mikkel Kessler but with the Dane forced to vacate, Froch got his chance to regain the strap - and he took it. The 33-year-old put in a spectacular display of disciplined boxing to keep Abraham at the end of his jab for 12 rounds and won comfortably on points.

RICKY BURNS v Roman Martinez - September
The plucky Scot put in the performance of his career to wrest the WBO super-featherweight strap from the clutches of the Puerto Rican. In the first round, the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow was stunned as Martinez caught Burns flush with a scintillating right hand that put the home fighter on the floor. However, Burns' Scottish resilience shone through as he battled back to win on points.

RENDALL MUNROE v Victor Terrazas - April
Leicester's boxing binman dumped the then undefeated Terrazas out of this WBC super-bantamweight title eliminator to make the boxing world sit up and take notice of his credentials. After losing the first four rounds, Munroe wore down his opponent with ferocious body punches in the lead up to a ninth round stoppage win.

MATTHEW HATTON v Yuriy Nuzhnenko

'Magic' Matthew was on the floor within the first three minutes of his first defence of the European welterweight title against former world champion Nuzhnenko. However, the Manchester fighter picked himself up and battled back heroically to eventually hold onto his belt with a unanimous points win.

AMIR KHAN v Pauli Malignaggi - May
Since teaming up with legendary coach Freddie Roach in the US, we've seen a new Khan and his 11th round stoppage of an experienced opponent in Malignaggi was a coming of age showing on his US debut. The Bolton man bossed this contest from the start as he landed countless jabs to keep the American at bay throughout.

DAVID HAYE v John Ruiz - April
Ruiz was meant to be a stern challenge for Haye, who was making his first defence of the WBA crown he won the previous year. However, the Londoner's fast hands were too much for Ruiz to handle and Haye pummelled Ruiz until the referee called time in the ninth round.

STEPHEN FOSTER JR v Levan Kirakosyan - October
Foster Jr finally made his mark on the super-featherweight division with this stoppage win over the experienced Kirakosyan to win the European title. The Manchester fighter went into the fight as the underdog, but he withstood a number of early attacks from the Armenian before unleashing a spectacular left-hook in the third round that sent the champion to the canvas.

JASON BOOTH v Steve Molitor - October

The Nottingham super-bantamweight may have lost his bid for the IBF crown against the Canadian Molitor, but it was a spirited display from a man who has had a bigger victory in his life. Booth beat alcohol and drug addictions to find his way back to the ring to fight for a world title and pushed Molitor the whole way - eventually just losing out on a majority points decision.

NATHAN CLEVERLY v Karo Murat - September
The Welshman was given his first chance at earning a shot at a world title and he didn't disappoint. However, Cleverly certainly didn't do it the easy way as he failed to use his height and reach advantage. It did make for a great spectacle as the pair went at it toe-to-toe before the referee was forced to stop Murat at the end of the ninth round due to his facial injuries.
