Minnesota-Duluth Defeats Delta State to Win Division II Championship

Minnesota-DuluthOn the heels of a 10-point fourth quarter, capped off in the waning seconds on the foot -- literally -- of kicker David Nadeau, Minnesota-Duluth claimed its second Division II championship by defeating Delta State, 20-17 in Florence, Ala.

The victory capped a 15-0 season, the school's second perfect season in the past three years.

Trailing 14-10 heading into the fourth quarter, running back Brad Foss rumbled for a 12-yard touchdown to put UMD up by three points. A Delta State field goal by Matt Snyder six minutes later tied the game at 17 and UMD got the ball back with just over two minutes remaining. However, it failed to get a first down and was forced to punt.

A Cody Eich-UMD interception two plays later that brought Minnesota-Duluth to the 50 with 52 seconds remaining set the stage for the game's dramatic finish, culminated by Nadeau's 32-yard field goal.

UMD dual-threat quarterback Chase Vogler finished the game 11-of-19 passing with 118 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota-Duluth did most of its damage on the ground, however, as Vogler added 83 yards rushing on 21 carries, while Brian Hanson had 97 yards and Foss had 62 yards. Hanson also lead the team with three catches and 54 yards receiving. Ben Helmer had the lone receiving touchdown for UMD, a 14-yarder in the first quarter.
