He may have claimed the notable scalp of John Part, but it might pay for Per Laursen not to get too carried away with his long-term chances at the World Darts Championship. The Dane had plenty to celebrate when causing the upset of the tournament so far with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over the under-the-weather Canadian. Laursen's reward - and we use the term lightly - is to face a certain Phil Taylor in the last 32, when a rather bizarrely scheduled competition resumes after its break for Christmas.
Now the 15-time World Champion may have insisted he wouldn't be bothered if he never won another tournament as he basked in the glow of the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, where he polled more than 70,000 votes to edge out athlete Jessica Ennis for second place, while looking far more elated than winning jockey Tony McCoy.
However, his 44-year-old Scandinavian opponent is long enough in the tooth to know that despite what he might say, the 'Power' remains as hungry as ever to add to his phenomenal collection of wins, a fact reflected in his ridiculously short odds of 4-11 to emerge triumphant when the tournament reaches its climax in early January.
To put that into some kind of perspective, the 50-year-old's nearest challenger is 14-1 shot James Wade, the World Grand Prix title holder. Laursen said: "This is the biggest win I've had and I'm over the moon. I may have no chance against Phil in the next round but it will be a great experience to play him and I'm sure I'll love it no matter what."
