Kenneth Ziegler, the father of Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, was arrested in West Virginia early Thursday morning after driving his vehicle into a police officer, resulting in a brief chase until his car was disabled with spike strips. He's being charged with attempted murder, two drug counts, obstruction and two fleeing counts.The Huntington Police Department said in a news release that officers were searching for someone else at 3:30 a.m. Thursday when they saw Ziegler trying to hide inside of a parked car. When officers approached the car, Ziegler drove into one of the officers, dragging him several feet.
According to Huntington's WOWK TV, Ziegler has faced legal problems in the past, having been arrested in Feb. 2008 with crack cocaine and marijuana in his vehicle. He was charged with possession, fleeing and burglary.
Mayo, 23, was born in Huntington and starred for Huntington High School before playing one season at USC and declaring for the NBA Draft in 2008. In his third season for the Grizzlies, he's averaging 13.0 points in 29 minutes a game.
