Wolves sank to the bottom of the Premier League on goal difference as Blackburn Rovers superbly bounced back from last week's Old Trafford capitulation with a comfortable win at Ewood Park.Mick McCarthy's men dropped below West Ham United as they made it 10 Premier League losses from their last 13 games.
That is prime relegation form and questions about McCarthy's future are likely to get louder in the coming weeks after this woeful showing.
It was all so different early on as the visitors started the better side, and after five minutes Paul Robinson brilliantly tipped Stephen Ward's effort on to the post and the ball fell to Ronald Zubar whose curled attempt then hit both the bar and post as it somehow stayed out.
Last week's comeback victory against Sunderland had clearly buoyed McCarthy's side while Rovers also seemed affected by their last match - the 7-1 mauling by Manchester United.
Sam Allardyce's men looked short of ideas and inspiration early on as they failed to cause any genuine problems in the opening 20 minutes but Wolves failed to make the most of their earlier dominance and Rovers punished them after 29 minutes when their first effort on goal saw them take a 1-0 lead.
Morten Gamst Pedersen's deep corner was nodded back across goal by Ryan Nelsen and David Dunn headed home from four yards despite Wolves' frantic claims that the ball did not cross the line as Kevin Doyle tried to clear.
However, Howard Webb rightly spotted that it had and awarded the goal as Rovers eeked their way into the lead.
The quality of the match did not improve hugely but Rovers did show a spark of class just before halftime as Brett Emerton doubled Rovers' lead.
Michel Salgado's long ball was superbly controlled by Jason Roberts and he offloaded to Emerton who thrashed past Wayne Hennessey to compound the visitors' woes.
After the interval, McCarthy brought on Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Stephen Hunt in a bid for a quick response from his side but it was Rovers who struck again when Ryan Nelsen shrugged off Ward's attentions in the box and he superbly volleyed home Pedersen's set-piece.
The goal ended any Wolves' hopes of getting something from the encounter although a George Elokobi blast was superbly stopped by Robinson with 20 minutes remaining and he was equally impressive soon after as he made two brilliant saves from Hunt. There was no way back for McCarthy's men as their Premier League future continues to look bleaker by the week.
