Steve Kean Faces Tough Job Convincing Emmanuel Adebayor to Join Blackburn

Emmanuel Adebayor, Real Madrid, May 7, 2011A big name striker is heading to Blackburn this summer according to the noises coming out of Ewood Park.

We have been here though before as Venky's, the club owners, have previously declared their intention to land a marquee signing.

David Beckham and Ronaldinho were two of the names linked with a move to Lancashire shortly after the India-based business group took the helm although the interest in both players was regarded suspsiciously and viewed more as a publicity stunt than a realistic aspiration.

But a report in the Daily Mirror claims that Emmanuel Adebayor now heads Steve Kean's list of summer targets suggests the club's sights are now trained on a deal that has more chance of being concluded. And certainly on one that makes much more sense.
There is the basis for a match in that Blackburn desperately need a new striker, while Adebayor is anxious to quit Manchester City after just two years.

With Kean believed to have been allocated around £30 million for new signings, a fee for Adebayor wouldn't be the problem.

A more likely stumbling block to negotiations would be the player's hefty wages, with Adebayor believed to earn a weekly salary of around £100,000. Even more important would be whether the forward would fancy making the short move up the road to join an unfashionable side in Blackburn.

Adebayor had hoped to remain at Real Madrid where he spent five months on loan last season but the Spanish club have no interest in exercising the option to make the arrangement permanent.

With City manager Roberto Mancini keen to offload the player, Adebayor could have been left in limbo.

But it appears there will be no shortage of takers from both home and abroad with a knockdown price of as little as £10 million being quoted for his services.

And at that figure, you can imagine Adebayor will be playing the waiting game to see what alternative offers arise, offers that are more attractive than joining a club that narrowly escaped relegation last seson.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp remains a long-term admirer of Adebayor, despite his links with arch rivals Arsenal.

Redknapp's side, whose side were eliminated from the Champions League by Adebayor last season, would be the Togo striker's favoured choice.

Yet Blackburn should be pulling out all the stops to sign him. They have been linked with Roma's Mirko Vucinic and Amauri of Juventus.

But with Adebayor being a cheaper option and knowing all about the rigours of the Premier League, he should is rightly Kean's top target.

With Chris Samba likely to follow Phil Jones on his way out of the club, possibly to Arsenal, two new defenders are a must now for Kean.

Yet a new striker is also critically important.

Roque Santa Cruz is expected to rejoin the club, ironically from Manchester City. But it is another Eastlands who matches Kean's requirements more closely.
