Daniel Cormier Easily Beats Jeff Monson

In a heavyweight bout that was lacking in fireworks and not particularly compelling, Daniel Cormier coasted his way to an easy unanimous decision victory over Jeff Monson on Saturday night's Strikeforce card.

Cormier was, as everyone knew going into the fight, the vastly superior fighter. But he was satisfied to out-strike Monson and win a one-sided unanimous decision, rather than go for a finish. That led to some of the fans in Dallas booing, as Cormier would hurt Monson with punches and kicks, but bide his time and wait for the next opportunity rather than going in for the finish. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Cormier.

Cormier is a great wrestler, but against Monson, a very good submission grappler, he didn't want to go to the ground. Cormier did put Monson flat on his back a couple times, but he didn't engage in Monson at all on the ground, afraid of getting caught in a submission.

If he's going to keep his reputation as one of the most talented up-and-coming heavyweights in MMA, Cormier is going to need to take a step up in competition and show more than he has in his first eight fights. But you can't argue with Cormier's record, which is now 8-0.

The 40-year-old Monson is now 42-12, and he just doesn't belong in the cage with highly talented fighters like Cormier. Monson was thoroughly outclassed.
