Born Winner and Manchester City Legend Mike Doyle Dies Aged 64

Mike DoyleManchester City have lost their most decorated player with the death of Mike Doyle at the age of 64.

A true leader, whose immeasurable contribution to City stretched over a decade and who won the title, the FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup between 1968 and 1970.

The news of Doyle's death came after he was treated for liver failure.

Born in Manchester, Doyle was City through and through and became an instant crowd favourite after declaring there were only two teams in Manchester - Manchester City and Manchester City reserves.

Doyle joined City as an apprentice in 1962 and went on to make over 550 senior appearances for the club before moving on to Stoke, Bolton and Rochdale.

As well as being part of the team that won the league title, FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup, he also skippered the side which won the League Cup again in 1976 after defeating Newcastle in the final.

The five-times capped England international is the third member of City's successful team of that era to die in the past nine months following the deaths of Neil Young in February and Malcolm Allison last October.

Dennis Tueart, who scored the winning goal for City in the 1976 League Cup final, described Doyle as a "born winner".

"He was one of the younger players in the Joe Mercer-Malcolm Allison era, but when I came in 1974 he then became my captain and there was no question, he was a fantastic leader on the field," said Tueart.

"Asa Hartford, another one of my colleagues in the 1976 team, texted me to give me the news and it is very sad.
