Martin Kaymer Aiming to Take Spotlight Away from Rory Mcllroy

Filed under:

Martin Kaymer, US Open, June 18, 2011There appears little chance of the fanfare surrounding Rory Mcllroy's stunning US Open triumph dying down.

But believe it or not the European Tour gets back into full swing on Thursday for the start of the BMW International Open in Germany.

And while Mcllroy will be taking a deserved rest and putting his feet up, a number of players who teed off at Congressional have made the long journey back to contest this event.

Heading the list in his own backyard will be the World No. 3 and home favourite Martin Kaymer.

Despite being tipped to shine in Maryland, the German finished in a disappointing 39th, extending a run of form that has fallen short of the high standards he normally sets.

Kaymer's hoping a return to his homeland, where he secured a career victory in 2008, will kick-start his underwhelming season.
"I just couldn't get my driving going last week," Kaymer told Sky Sports.

"My driving was a little bit better in the final round of the US Open and I just need to swing it a little better.

"Yet I made the cut with problems with my swing so that tells me I'm not too far away from playing well again.

"And I like this golf course and it is a very good tournament, very well organised.

"For me it is nice to be home for a week. It's nice to play at home in front of my friends and have the support of the Germans and give a little bit back."

Kaymer will be looking to reclaim the title for Germany after two successive English winners, with Nick Dougherty winning in 2009 and David Horsey lifting the trophy last year.

Horsey's late charge saw him come from five strokes back to win by one shot from Ross Fisher 12 months ago, a final round 67 sealing his maiden European Tour title.

He faces a tough task in attempting to repeat that feat and defend his crown given the calibre of the field.

Other former champions who will compete at what is usually a low-scoring venue, include veterans Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez along with Paul Casey and Retief Goosen.

They will be joined by Sergio Garcia, who despite being let down by his putting, was in the chasing pack behind runaway winner Mcllroy, finishing tied for seventh place.
