Swimming: Rebecca Adlington Close to Her Best After Worrying Dip in Form

After her Olympic success in Beijing in 2008, the British public came to expect miracles of Rebecca Adlington every time she dipped her toes in a swimming pool.

She famously won gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle events to become the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908.

However, life did not go according to plan afterwards as she suffered with the new found expectations placed upon her and struggled at the World Swimming Championships in Rome in 2009 where she only picked up a bronze in the 400m freestyle and came fourth in the 800m discipline.

Adlington battled to contain the explosion of interest in her life and find a way to put all that to one side and focus on winning swimming races.

Since the disappointment of 2009, Adlington had been able to refocus and concentrate on what she loves doing the most - and it appears to be paying off after a brilliant swim in the 800m freestyle at the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield.

She won the final in 8 minutes and 24 seconds and the encouraging sign for Adlington and fans of British swimming is that she thinks she can go much quicker when the World Championships are held in Shanghai next month.
