Steven Gerrard is not into hyperbole. So when the Liverpool captain states he is "anxiously" awaiting news of who will follow Jordan Henderson in at Anfield then it is a sign of how crucial the next few weeks are with regards to the team's prospects next season.
"We've got to make sure we've got a squad capable of going into the season and competing with Manchester United," said Gerrard.
"It's a big statement by the club getting a big signing in early and now we're watching anxiously for a few more to follow.
"It's exciting times. It's important this team delivers very soon because we've been a number of seasons without putting a trophy in the cabinet and that's not what Liverpool is about."
Gerrard is not the only one desperate to learn about Kenny Dalglish's next move in the transfer market. Liverpool's fans are also on tenterhooks.
A picture of Aston Villa's Stewart Downing posing with a Liverpool scarf in a Spanish bar almost sent social networking site Twitter into meltdown.
The image of the 26-year-old winger, whose Villa future remains uncertain, with striker Andy Carroll was branded fake by the West Midlands club.
"It looks fake and the point is Stewart has confirmed that's the case," said a Villa spokesman. "He said it was absolutely not real, he did not stand there with a Liverpool scarf."
Yet the frenzied reaction the photograph provoked only served to illustrate how desperate supporters are for news of impending arrivals.
If Dalglish gets his way then it will not be long before Downing is posing for real in a Liverpool shirt.
Downing, valued by his club at around £20 million, is wanted by Dalglish to supply ammunition for Carroll, while Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam and Ipswich's highly-rated 18-year-old striker Connor Wickham are also on the Liverpool manager's radar as Dalglish attempts to redress the balance in Liverpool's long-running battle with Manchester United.
"As a Liverpool fan and a player it's frustrating when you see your arch rivals lifting trophies, but you've got to give credit where it's due," added Gerrard, who is confident of being fit for the start of the new season after groin surgery in March.
