Why John Williams Could Turn Out to Be Man City's Shrewdest Signing of the Summer

Former Blackburn chairman John Williams (left) with Sam Allardyce (right)It hardly caused a ripple in a week that saw Chelsea appoint a new manager, Manchester United announce their second major signing and Arsenal struggle to keep Cesc Fabregas out of the clutches of Barcelona.

But John Williams's arrival at Manchester City, confirmed in a five paragraph club statement, could yet turn out to be one of the shrewdest appointments of the summer.

Four months after the Venky's takeover at Blackburn led him to ending his 13 years as chairman at Ewood Park, Williams has resurfaced at Eastlands.

It might not be the high profile signing City fans have become accustomed to - hence the reason why the appointment was made without fuss or fanfare.

But even the most loyal of Blackburn's followers must agree that their loss is City's gain.

Williams is a respected figure within Premier League circles and at Blackburn he established a reputation as one of the most approachable chairmen in the top flight.

He also enjoyed a close relationship with the players which is significant considering City striker Carlos Tevez's statement last December that "my relationship with certain executives and individuals at the club has broken down".

Having been against the sacking of Sam Allardyce last season, Williams accepted a severance package from Venky's in February, three months after the poultry giant bought the club from the Walker Family Trust.

He takes a senior position at Eastlands and his roles include overseeing player contracts and developing the club's academy structure.

His appointment is expected to free up football administrator Brian Marwood and chief executive Garry Cook to concentrate on transfer business.
