Roger Federer Serves His Way Into BNP Paribas Masters Semis

Filed under:

Roger FedererRoger Federer rattled off his 12th straight win on Friday, defeating 12th-ranked Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

Riding an impenetrable serve, Federer defeated the French Open semifinalist and earns his first career berth in the semifinals at the Paris Masters.

During the second-set tiebreaker, the 16-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland won three straight points to close the match out -- including a vital point off Melzer's serve to go up 5-4. Federer then served an ace to go up 6-4 and sealed the contest at 7-4 with a perfectly placed first serve that Melzer could not return.

The match became competitive in the second set as Melzer held serve throughout. However, Federer only lost three points off his first serve in the match, tallying a winning percentage of 92. He complemented that statistic with 18 aces, while Melzer only generated three aces. Federer's serve was not broken once as Melzer didn't have a single opportunity. Federer's return game was consistent in the first set as well, breaking Melzer twice.
