DENVER -- For the previous few seasons, there were two significant hometown All-Stars in the NBA.One was LeBron James, who is from Akron, Ohio, just south of Cleveland and who played in six straight All-Star Games with the Cavaliers through last February. The other has been Chauncey Billups, who has appeared in the past five All-Star Games, the last two representing his hometown Denver Nuggets.
Everybody knows what happened with James, who will return to Cleveland on Thursday night with the Miami Heat to what should be a very hostile environment. Billups only can imagine what it would be like to have a hometown turn on you.
"Bad. Hate me bad,'' said Billups, talking about how awful it would be if his native Denver ever gave him the treatment James is receiving. "That's the worst feeling I got. You all know how much pride I got in Denver and everything. The worst thing for the whole city would be to hate me. That would hurt my heart because I've done so much. I believe so much in the city.
"I bleed orange in my Broncos. I bleed the sky blue (Nuggets). Like I'm Denver to the core as (James) is with Cleveland. Maybe it's a little more Akron than Cleveland, but it's the same thing. But that would stick me hard. That would hurt me in my heart, man. That would hurt me.''
