Sir Alex Ferguson is renowned for ringing other managers to offer a word of advice here and some kindly words there.Talk to practically every manager in the land and they will confirm he is a managerial patriach, more than happy to help others out and contact those he believes are worthy of his praise.
And Ferguson could well be adding Bert van Marwijk to his contacts list.
The Holland coach has told Wesley Sneijder that it is essential for his footballing development to join Manchester United and thus end one of the summer's most drawn out transfer escapades.
Although Ferguson publicly scoffed at the suggestion he is interested in Sneijder on Friday, the truth is quite the opposite as the United manager looks to replace Paul Scholes following his retirement.
A £40 million bid is in the offing for the Inter Milan midfielder although his £250,000-a-week wage demands are still a significant stumbling block.
United - and Ferguson - have been around too long and been too succesful in recent times to be held to ransom by Sniejder and the signs so far are that they will simply refuse to pay that much money for the midfielder.
And that is where van Marwijk comes in.
According to the Sunday Mirror, he has told Sniejder that joining United is integral to his evolution and he wants him to forget the deal breaking and sign immediately.
He said: "A transfer to United will do Wesley a lot of good. He will benefit as a player from playing for them.
"With Real Madrid and Inter Milan he has already the biggest club names in football on his CV. But Manchester United will be another big step up the international ladder for him.
"Manchester United have a unique playing style and they perform consistently at the highest level.
"Their methods in training, and the way people work at this club with players, are superb.
"This is why it will be a new challenge to Wesley. It will inspire him and it will give him new energy."
"The United style is much more similar to the Dutch style than Inter's way of playing.
"When Wesley plays for Holland we make sure he gets the ball as soon as possible to his feet. Much quicker than Inter try that.
"It means he can have a goal attempt much quicker or can give a decisive pass.
"In Italy he plays in a more sitting role, and he is facing six defenders all the time.
"The control we let him take in attack with the Dutch team, I can also see with United.
"I think he would really fit into the midfield perfectly at Old Trafford."
Van Marwijk is right: Sneijder would be the perfect fit for United's midfield and Ferguson will now be hoping that he is listening to his international manager.
And if he is, then van Marwijk can be quietly confident that his phone is going to ring over the next week or so.
