Is John Daly Set for a Comeback Following His Top 10 Finish in Canada?

Filed under:

John Daly, tastefully attiredHe is a larger than life character who always draws a crowd whenever he plays, so it was good to see John Daly among the top 10 at the RBC Canadian Open.

The two-time major winner is perhaps more known for his colourful trousers than his achievements at the PGA Championship in 1991 and the Open in 1995, but beneath the "grip it, rip it" mentality there is a hugely talented golfer.

After all, when he won at St Andrews in 1995, it proved his success in 1991 at Crooked Stick Golf Club was no fluke.

Since then, his career has been the proverbial rollercoaster with so many ups and downs it is difficult to keep track.

Is this why the golf fans like him so much? His entertainment factor? Perhaps. He is certainly a sports star whom they can relate to.

Just consider his past - losing his tour card, his drink problems, his addiction to Diet Coke and M&M's, his divorces, his cash flow problems that resulted to him selling merchandise from his van, his gastric band - he comes across as a lovable rogue.

After his tied ninth place in Canada, Daly admitted it felt good to be on the leaderboard after overcoming his latest injury problems.
He told a media briefing: "It's been a struggle. You cannot play good golf out here when you're hurt. I've had a little groin problem, but other than that, everything felt pretty good.

"It would have been nice [to win] but I didn't hit a lot of greens, other than that, I hit it all right. [I'm taking a ton of positives from this]. There's no doubt about it. I love the way I chipped over the last two days."
