Maria Sharapova Sets Up Possible Showdown with Serena Williams

Beaten Maria SharapovaWimbledon finalist Maria Sharapova made a winning return to action as she defeated Daniela Hantuchova to set up a possible meeting with Serena Williams in the Stanford quarter-finals.

The world No. 5 was made to work hard for her 6-2 2-6 6-4 triumph over the Slovakian in the
Bank of the West Classic event in what was her first match since losing to Petra Kvitova at SW19.

It took the Russian 2 hours and 12 minutes to close out victory after she was again undermined by her serve, making 11 double faults in total.

Next up for Sharapova is either the unseeded Williams, who is playing only her third tournament since a year off due to injury, or Russian Maria Kirilenko. The pair face one another later on Thursday.

Elsewhere, France's Marion Bartoli claimed a 6-4 6-3 victory over Canadian Rebecca Marino and there were also victories for fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and eighth seed Dominika Cibulkova.

Top seed Victoria Azarenka, who beat Sharapova to win last year's title, and fourth seed Samantha Stosur are also in action on Thursday.
