Having won her first match in Stanford against Anastasia Rodionova 6-0 6-0, the American was made to dig deeper by Kirilenko, eventually winning 6-2 3-6 6-2.
The former world No. 1 has slumped to 169 in the world rankings after a year on the sidelines but her match against Wimbledon finalist Sharapova on Friday should offer a more accurate picture of exactly where she stands in world tennis at present.
Williams certainly has a golden opportunity to improve her ranking this week after top seed Victoria Azarenka and fourth seed Samantha Stosur both suffered surprise exits.
Defending champion Azarenka lost 4-6 7-5 6-2 to New Zealand qualifier Marina Erakovic, the world No. 121, while Stosur bowed out 6-3 7-5 to Wimbledon semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki.
REACTION:
Williams admitted she was far from her best despite winning:
"I was a little sluggish out there. I got upset and started playing well enough to win. I started out fine but after that injury timeout I was sluggish."
