Why Roberto Mancini Wants to Copy Sir Alex Ferguson's Book of Management

Roberto Mancini with Garry CookIt was not long ago that he was irritated by Sir Alex Ferguson's comments about 'kamikaze spending', but Roberto Mancini now wants to copy his rival and take control of his own destiny at Manchester City.

Mancini might have steered City to an FA Cup triumph - their first major trophy for 35 years - and secured the richest club in the world a place in the Champions League for the first time.

But the Italian has now revealed what many observers have suspected for a while - that there has been friction behind the scenes over transfer strategy.

Now Mancini wants to take a leaf out of Ferguson's book of management and take greater control of transfer strategy, medical staff and contract renewals as he begins his second full season at the club.

Chief executive Garry Cook, who accused AC Milan of "bottling it" after failing to clinch a deal to bring Kaka to to City in 2009, has a key role in transfer matters at the newly named Etihad Stadium along with football administrator Brian Marwood.

But with City still scrambling for signings with the new season fast approaching, Mancini wants to be like Ferguson and have a say on anything that might affect his own job.

"I agree with Alex Ferguson, who says a manager needs total control," said Mancini. "But he has been at United for a long time so for him it is easy. He has to be in control of everything, doesn't he?

"Maybe for me it is difficult because I have only been here for 18 months or so. Maybe I need to have more control of the team and the other situations. For a manager that's very important. Maybe if I win the Premier League this season it will be different."

Mancini admits there have been differences of opinion between himself and Cook in the past but insists the relationship is healthy as the club close in on the second most expensive signing in British football history.

The manager is frustrated that he has so far landed only two of the five new signings he planned this summer - defenders Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic.

But the arrival of Atletico Madrid's Argentine striker Sergio Aguero in a deal thought to be worth around £38 million will provide Mancini with a major boost as he attempts to mount a serious title assault.
