Snooker: Twittering Players Warned to Mind Their Ps and Cues

Snooker chiefs have joined the growing number of sporting bodies to warn their members of the dangers of over-stepping the mark and making something of a Twit of themselves on social networking sites.

Rather than having to act retrospectively as many other sports have been forced to by imposing stiff fines in the wake of an unwanted outburst from one of their number, the guardians of the green baize have wisely tried to take the initiative.

They've seen fit to issue some timely advice to ensure the trickle of correspondence from 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' doesn't become a torrent in the wake of complaints from members of the public over the language used by some players in their small contributions to the worldwide web.

Like the majority of sports, snooker has taken to social networking, especially Twitter, in a big way. All the game's major movers and shakers at least have accounts - normally with the numbers 147 incorporated into their username, how orignial, - even if they don't always utilise them on an overly regular basis.

So far, just about everyone involved has managed to steer clear of controversy, with perhaps world number 29 Mark King's at times graphic description of his vasectomy the closest any of the recognised names has come to courting anything like controversy.

"We understand that use of these technologies to communicate to the public and sporting fans are becoming common practice and play an important role in the promotion of individual players and our sport in general," WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said, in a letter to players, as reported by snookerscene.blogspot.com.

Snooker lovers are on the whole easy-going souls, and are in general happy to ignore the occasional use of industrial language in return for a glimpse into the lives of the players they so enjoy watching.

There have been one or two isolated moments of slight discord. Judd Trump (pictured) was rather put out to come in for some stick from several of his 53,000 followers, clearly vexed as to the insensitive subject-matter in these austere economic times, after the Bristolian's musing as to what kind of blinged-up new car he could invest in with his earnings from reaching this year's World Championship final.
