Before he came to fame as an internet sensation and then a full-fledged mixed martial artist as "Kimbo Slice," a Miami athlete who then went by his given name of Kevin Ferguson harbored dreams of being a professional football player. According to some that played with Kimbo back in high school, he was on his way to a college scholarship when a hurricane rocked the area and wreaked havoc on everything including football schedules, knocking Kimbo off recruiters' maps.Twenty years later, his son has the same dream, and apparently, he's making waves. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Kevin Ferguson II will begin his junior year at Miami's Booker T. Washington High in the fall.
The younger Ferguson says he draws inspiration from his dad's success.
"He worked hard to achieve the goal he had in his mind from before I was born," he said. "Him being an MMA fighter and a known celebrity, that just motivates me to push hard. Because if he could do it, I know I could do it. So I just try to not just live up to expectations, but to pass expectations."
He recently transferred from Miramar High, where last year he rushed for 275 yards and six touchdowns on 44 carries. According to the Orlando Sun-Sentinel story that profiled him, he also carries a 3.2 grade point average.
He says that so far, he's received recruiting letters from six different colleges, and he hopes to start receiving scholarship offers soon.
As for his running style, well, let's just say there are no surprises.
"When it comes to it, I'd rather not put a move on somebody, I would rather run them flat over," he said. "Physical, I'm all physical. Finesse guys finish last, physical guys finish first."
Meanwhile, dad Kimbo is set to tackle his second pro sport when he makes his boxing debut against James Wade on August 13 in Miami, Oklahoma.
