Wesley Sneijder is Still in Sir Alex Ferguson's Sights at Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson is still masterminding a move for Wesley SneijderWhen Sir Alex Ferguson claims there will be no more signings at Manchester United during a transfer window, invariably it means another signing is on the way.

And just a day after Ferguson hinted that his summer spending spree is over, United's chief executive David Gill has risked the hairdryer treatment at full blast after revealing the club's business is far from finished.

Gill has told the Daily Telegraph that United still intend to sign a "world-class player" and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to ascertain that the player in question must be Wesley Sneijder.

While Ferguson has often stated that a deal for Sneijder seems inprobable due to the variety of hurdles involved, Gill has been working behind the scenes to try and tempt Inter Milan into signing the Dutch midfielder.

He said: "We've got a great squad and to get into that squad you need to be a world-class player. There's no point, if you can't get the players you want, in buying someone for the sake of buying someone.

"But we are looking at one more player to bring in. Nothing's happening - nothing imminent - on that at the moment, but we'll see what happens when we get home [from the United States]. There'll still be 31 days of the transfer window to see if anything develops."

Sneijder's wages of £190,000 a week at Inter will make him one of the highest earners at Old Trafford, while United also have reservations about the lack of re-sale potential for a player who is 27.

But Ferguson clearly realises that the retirement of Paul Scholes leaves him with a major hole to fill, as pointed out by David Beckham earlier this week.

To replace a player of Scholes's vast quality will require United to push the boat out and make a statement. Sneijder fits the bill and ticks all the boxes in terms of his value on the pitch and his experience of the Champions League will be invaluable.

Ferguson has already spent £48.3 million this summer on David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young, perhaps proving that despite winning the Premier League title he knew they did it while being far from their best.
