Vincent Kompany Should Replace Carlos Tevez as Manchester City Captain

Vincent Kompany of Manchester CityAs a captain of any side, let alone a growing Premier League force, you need to lead by example and be the driving force behind a team.

So it can be seen as no real surprise that Carlos Tevez will be stripped of the armband at Manchester City next season - whether he stays or not.

Tevez has clearly overstepped his mark in his bid to escape Manchester City and his latest request to leave surely makes his position untenable.

And it's claimed he will be punished when he learns Vincent Kompany will be installed as the full-time skipper in his place for next season.
According to News of the World, Roberto Mancini wants a fully committed leader as they chase Premier League and Champions League success - and all roads lead to the highly-rated Belgian defender.

Kompany is a model pro, has the respect of his team-mates and, more significantly, proved his worth having been named the club's player of the season last term.

While Kolo Toure's drug ban forced him to miss the final few months of the season, Kompany's performances went from strength to strength in his absence.

He wore the armband when Tevez was not on the pitch and led Mancini's side to an FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester United at Wembley.

Now that he's found his rightful position - in central defence rather than central midfield - Kompany's game has scaled new heights.

Along with that, Kompany has not stepped out of line off the pitch, unlike Tevez.

The Argentinian's frequent attacks on Mancini, his two transfer requests and his constant outbursts about life in Manchester have done him no favours with those fans who once idolised him.

The fact that Tevez has never mastered the English language also, if you like, speaks volumes and perhaps that has been the clearest indication he has never been it for the long haul - even after five years on these shores.

The striker, believed to be on £220,000 a week, is desperate to link up with his young family in either Italy or Spain for the start of the season.

Ahead of such a big season, Mancini is right not to want the Tevez saga to overshadow his pre-season plans and disrupt the dressing room atmosphere.

And with would-be discards Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bridge and Emmanuel Adebayor still on the books, the last thing Mancini needs is another troublesome scenario to deal with.

That's why making Kompany his new captain is one decision that will slip under the radar as it's one move that few can argue with - including the wantaway Tevez.
