After a recent highly amicable round of golf with his Sunderland skipper, Steve Bruce was as bemused as anyone to read reports that Lee Cattermole was heading to Liverpool in a £10 million deal, in a supposed fit of pique at his imminent loss of the captaincy to the newly-arrived John O'Shea.Ensuring actions spoke equally as loudly as his words, Cattermole led the side in the 1-1 pre-season draw with German third tier outfit Arminia Bielefeld, with Bruce insisting the Teesider won't be following Jordan Henderson to Merseyside anytime soon.
"I don't know where that has come from," the Sunderland manager, who also confirmed he has finally been priced out of the running for Wigan midfielder Charles N'Zogbia, said. "It's news to me.
"A newspaper ran a flier but I've not even thought about the situation to be honest. I've had bigger things on my plate to worry about. We've been dealing with Liverpool for the past five weeks over Jordan and there was never a mention that they wanted Lee. I don't know where it's coming from at all.
"It's all tittle tattle and - to be brutally honest - I think it is mischief-making as well." Tabloid newspapers making mischief? Really? Whatever next?
Another twist in the Tevez plot
Enough already on the Carlos Tevez saga. Just when we thought it was all finally going to go away, Corinthians have flatly denied Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini's claims that the clubs had 'reached an agreement' on a £40 million move for the homesick Argentinian.
The Brazilians confirm an improved offer for the unsettled forward, but insist any deal is far from sealed, so expect several more acres of valuable rain forest being felled to keep us bang up to date with the non-happenings over the coming days. At least the Brazilian transfer window shuts imminently, so that might help move things along. Please, oh please.
Corinthians' statement read: "Because of news reports this morning of an agreement between Corinthians and the Carlos Tevez, president Andres Sanchez is keen to clarify that Manchester City has not accepted Corinthians' offer for the player.
"In fact, the club (City) sent a counter-proposal, which, due to the time difference, has only just reached the Corinthians board this morning. In the counter-proposal, the Premier League club asks for changes in the form of payment and also in the total value of the transaction.
"Finally, president Sanchez advises that there is no concrete agreement with Tevez at this time and the counter-proposal will be analysed by him and the board."
