Last season could not have gone much better for Smalling, who made 30 appearances in all competitions after joining from Fulham in a £10 million deal last summer.
Javier Hernandez grabbed all of the headlines with his fine start to life in England but Ferguson will view Smalling's first year at Old Trafford in similar terms.
And the potential he has shown has resulted in him being given a contract that will keep him at United until 2016, presumably with a significant pay rise to reward his progress.
"I am delighted Chris has signed a new contract," Ferguson said.
"Chris has been outstanding since joining us from Fulham last year, he is an extremely talented young defender, he's quick, strong and reads the game well. He is a great asset to the team."
Smalling, who impressed at the European Under 21 Championships alongside new United signing Phil Jones, admits that he even surprised himself with that amount of games he featured in last season.
"This is a great club and in the short time I have been here I have already achieved more than I could have ever expected to," he said.
"I am looking forward to a long and successful career at Manchester United."
