Arrival of John O'Shea and Wes Brown Shows Sunderland's New Pulling Power

John O'SheaAnd then there were...hang on a minute, we've lost count, there have been that many. Yes, we've doubled checked, had it independently verified, and it's now 10 summer arrivals and counting at Sunderland, with the imminent capture of John O'Shea, who is on Wearside to complete the formalities on a £4 million move from Manchester United.

The latest addition to Steve Bruce's rapidly-evolving squad won't be in any danger of feeling lonely as he settles into his new surroundings, as there are plenty of others in the same boat.

At last count, the Black Cats had already landed Connor Wickham, Craig Gardner, Seb Larsson, Keiren Westwood, Ahmed Elmohamady, Ji-Dong Won, David Vaughan, Roarie Deacon in what has been a hectic few weeks.

O'Shea's Old Trafford team-mate Wes Brown completes the list, although as with ex-Blackpool midfielder Vaughan and former Arsenal trainee Deacon, it's a deal which still has to be rubber-stamped.

O'Shea and Brown have between them 28 years' service under Sir Alex Ferguson, having amassed a collective 750 appearances and a catalogue of honours along the way. There's no doubting it's a massive upheaval for both to move on, but as many players have found out down the years, there's little sentiment from the Scot when you are no longer part of his long-term plans.

While detractors might rather unkindly call them cast-offs, at the respective ages of 31 and 30 it's clear they still have plenty of seasons left in the tank. In their own way as much as Wickham's eye-catching capture from Ipswich, their arrival reflects the strides being made at the Stadium of Light and the new-found pulling-power Bruce can call on.
