Every golf fan should spare a thought for Colin Montgomerie when the Open comes around this July, for the Scot will be sat at home with his feet up watching it on TV, like the rest of us.The crucial difference is, however, while we are used to seeing the four day event unfold from the comfort of our lounge, it will be a new experience for Monty.
The seven-time Order of Merit winner, who turns 48 later this month, will miss out on playing in the competition for the first time in 22 years after he failed to qualify.
Montgomerie finished last at the final international qualifying session at Sunningdale Golf Club on Monday after posting rounds of 71 and 74 to finish on six over par for the two rounds.
It is his latest failed attempt to play in a major - a title that has eluded him throughout his career - after he blew his chance of reaching the US Open last week with another poor showing over a 36-hole one-day event.
