Andy Murray Takes it Easy As Andy Roddick Shows His Class

Filed under:

Andy Murray was able to enjoy a rare day off to rest his injured ankle after Marin Cilic, his quarter final opponent in the Aegon Championships at Queen's, pulled out just minutes before the pair were due on court.

That enabled the Scot, who hurt the ankle during the French Open last week, to relax ahead of tomorrow's semi-final showdown with the big-serving Andy Roddick.

There had been little indication that Cilic, the number eight seed, was not fit enough to play but it turned out the Croat had suffered a knee injury the previous day.
Number three seed Roddick then proved to be too powerful for Fernando Verdasco, the Spanish number seven seed, in a rain-affected but still enthralling quarter final.

The American served ferociously and attacked his opponent's relentlessly to take the first set 6-2 and he was 3-1 up in the second when the rain intervened.

The orange-shirted Verdasco had to save three break points once play resumed but the Texan broke him anyway to make sure the contest would be short-lived.

The Spaniard was desperate for a toe-hold on the game and made some optimistic challenges that were quashed by the Hawkeye technology before he managed to save two match points at 5-1 down.

Roddick, a four-time winner of this particular competition, then served out to win 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour on court.

Meanwhile, in the women's tournament in Birmingham, the Aegon Classic, number four seed Daniela Hantuchova became the first to book a place in the semi-finals.

The Slovak defeated unseeded American Alison Riske 6-2 6-4 before Ana Ivanovic, the number two seed, joined her by disposing of Mirjana Lucic of Croatia 6-3 6-4.

Shuai Peng, the Chinese number three seed, was next, defeating New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-4 4-6 6-3.
