Man United 2 Chelsea 1: Reds Now Stand on the Brink of Record 19th Title

John Obi Mikel of Chelsea is challenged by Wayne Rooney of Manchester UnitedManchester United moved to within touching distance of a record 19th title with an inspired performance against their main challengers.

Javier Hernandez put Sir Alex Ferguson's side in front after just 36 seconds and Nemanja Vidic added a second midway through the first half as United threatened to run riot.

Chelsea were blown away by the early onslaught and although they pulled one back through Frank Lampard, the visitors only threatened when they were able to apply pressure late on.

They are now six points ahead of Carlo Ancelotti's men with two games remaining and with remaining games against Blackburn and Blackpool, they only need one point to confirm their title.

Ferguson had stressed beforehand that he wanted the title done and dusted against Chelsea and his players had clearly taken note.

Moments after the kick-off, Ji-Sung Park threaded a pass through to Hernandez and David Luiz's slip allowed the Mexican to race clear to open the scoring.

In the 23rd mine the lead was doubled when Ryan Giggs clipped a cross over from the left and Vidic arrived unmarked to head in.

United should have led by more but were pegged back when Lampard prodded in from Branislav Ivanovic's flick.

The visitors pressed and pressed but did not create a clear chance after that breakthrough and United now have one hand on the title.
