Birmingham City have already begun planning their bid to climb out of the Championship at the first attempt. But, on the early evidence, you have to wonder whether they have made the ideal start.
Birmingham have released a statement claiming they are in negotiations with James McFadden over a new contract, but have decided to release Kevin Phillips and Lee Bowyer.
Scotland international McFadden has been out of action all season with a cruciate ligament injury and his absence was a crucial factor in Birmingham's relegation from the Premier League.
On his day, the Scotland international is a maverick with the ability to turn a game, but those talents have been rarely glimpsed at St Andrew's since his arrival from Everton.
The situation with McFadden is more confusing because the frantic pace of the Championship does not seem ideally suited to his languid style.
That is hardly something you could say of either Phillips or Bowyer. Phillips's record at Championship level still makes him the envy of the majority of strikers at that level.
