Marin Cilic was the big-name casualty on day one of the French Open after the 19th seed crashed to a shock straight sets defeat to Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.Croatian Cilic slumped to a 7-6 (5) 6-4 6-4 defeat, making 67 unforced errors as Hidalgo booked a berth in the second round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in 13 attempts.
Seventh seed David Ferrer claimed a straightforward 6-3 6-3 6-1 victory over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, while 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka ended Augustin Gensse's involvement with a 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 win.
Home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was also triumphant with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 success over Jan Hajek.
In the women's draw, 2010 finalist Samantha Stosur was a 6-2 6-3 winner over Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, but 19th seed Shahar Peer suffered a surprise early exit after being beaten by Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 7-6 (4) 6-1.
