Why Craig Mackail-Smith is Desperate to Mark His Peterborough Exit With Goals

Craig Mackail-SmtihManager Darren Ferguson will undoubtedly dominate the pre-match preparations for Peterborough's play-off final after being presented with the chance to earn promotion in his dad's own backyard.

But the visit to Sir Alex Ferguson's Old Trafford also promises to be an emotional afternoon for Craig Mackail-Smith in what is almost certain to be his last appearance in a Posh shirt.

The striker played a major part in guiding the club to a date with Huddersfield a week on Sunday, securing his 34th goal of the season against Milton Keynes Dons to only increase the likelihood of his departure from London Road.

Peterborough's colourful director of football Barry Fry has already promised that Mackail-Smith, midfielder George Boyd and goalkeeper Joe Lewis will be allowed to leave even if the club are promoted back to the Championship.

But nobody in Ferguson's squad is more coveted than the Scotland international, who will cost at least £2.75 million this summer, and is the League One player of the year.

Norwich, QPR, Celtic and Reading are all keen to sign the 27-year-old and Ferguson faces an almighty challenge finding a replacement.
