Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko were both on target as Manchester City secured a victory that guaranteed them third place and automatic qualification for the Champions League group stage.Lescott opened the scoring with a header that he knew nothing about and Dzeko doubled the lead just after the hour mark before Daniel Sturridge was shown a straight red card late on.
After holding off the challenge of Tottenham to secure a top-four spot, City finished above Arsenal and will now be keen to make another mark in the transfer market, with a limitless budget and Champions League football on offer at Eastlands.
City struggled to cope with Bolton set pieces and should have fallen behind when Gary Cahill and Kevin Davies won headers, unmarked no more than six yards out of goal.
Gareth Barry passed up a fine opportunity when he headed on to the bar from three yards from a Dedryck Boyata cross before David Silva lifted over the from close range.
But City took the lead when Adam Johnson's corner hit the unaware Lescott, sending the ball into the corner of the Bolton net.
Bolton attempted a response but Dzeko added a second after Cahill had blocked Barry's cross to ensure that Owen Coyle's side finished the season with five straight defeats.
