Luke Donald Still Gunning for No. 1 Ranking Despite Course Controversy

Filed under:

Luke DonaldLuke Donald posted a second round total of 72 to remain in the hunt at the BMW PGA Championship.

The world No. 2 has the potential to leapfrog countryman Lee Westwood and snatch top spot with victory at Wentworth, while no doubt the organisers of this event will also be praying he tops the leaderboard on Sunday.

As FanHouse UK has discussed, the players have been extremely critical of the redevelopments of the West Course.

Under the eye of Ernie Els, the course has been lengthened and toughened to the point where many of this week's field are beginning to question the way it is set up. Such criticism has wrangled with Wentworth resident Els who maintains it is "a fair and honest test of golf".

With the leaderboard covered in blue over-par scores, Donald is still in the red at six under for the tournament. He came close to winning this event last year when he was beaten by Simon Kahn, who is currently five over this week.

Kahn's victory was a great story at the time, for he only played after receiving a late call up from one of the sponsors. He was ranked 471st in the world, yet his final round of 66 netted him the £650,000 first prize.

Great story, but hardly the winner the tournament wanted.

A quick glance through the previous champions reveals names such as Anders Hansen, David Howell, Angel Cabrera, Scott Drummond and Ignacio Garrido - good golfers in their own right, but not really players to get excited about.

The names of Miguel Angel Jimenez and Paul Casey will be more recognisable to the public but what Wentworth and the European Tour need this week is a "big name" winner to maintain the profile of this tournament.
