Tottenham winger Gareth Bale was the toast of the Professional Footballers' Association on Sunday night after winning their prestigious Player of the Year award for the 2010/11 campaign.Bale might have lit up the Champions League group stages with his single-handed demolition of Inter Milan and scored a handful of wonder goals in the Premier League, yet was he the right choice to win an award which recognises consistency over the entire campaign?
Here Fanhouse UK picks three players more deserving than Bale for the PFA award.
Charlie Adam (Blackpool)
Has any player ever made the step up from Championship level to the Premier League look easier? Adam has made a mockery of the theory England's top flight is the toughest to crack in the world after taking to it like a duck to water. If Blackpool do go down this season then their skipper can at least console himself with the fact he could not have done any more. Nine Premier League goals would be a fine return for any midfielder in the division, never mind one from a side embroiled in a relegation battle but that is exactly what the Scot has achieved. Few if any possess a better range of passing than the former Rangers man, who also takes a deadly set-piece, and interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and Aston Villa in January was confirmation of his rising stock. Tangerines manager Ian Holloway may have succeeded in holding on to his most prized asset for the remainder of the campaign but he will almost certainly be on his way to bigger and better things in the summer.
