Just as in Manchester, the gap between the team in red and the team in blue and white has narrowed significantly in north London and now Arsenal and Tottenham could be locked in an off-field battle to land the star of last season's Champions League. That man is Argentina striker Diego Milito, whose goals helped Inter Milan land the trophy in 2010 before Jose Mourinho decamped for Real Madrid.
According to The Sun, the 31-year-old is keen to leave the San Siro and try his luck in the Premier League before he gets too old, and if so then both Arsenal and Tottenham are said to be interested.
Because of his age, Milito's price tag will not be a problem for either club as his worth has been estimated at around the £5 million mark. The question is, therefore, which club would he chose?
Of course, Tottenham's cause could only be helped by their qualification for next season's Champions League and at the moment Harry Redknapp and Co are second best in what appears to be a two-way tussle with Manchester City for fourth, just as it was last term.
Milito, who scored twice in Inter's 2-0 triumph over Bayern Munich, will be expecting Arsenal to book their usual place, although he will also have noticed that Tottenham's first foray into the competition saw them last longer than the Gunners, and they were only removed by Mourinho's Madrid.
Should Tottenham prove a bigger draw then who would play with Milito, who is no Leo Messi or Carlos Tevez on the ball but appears to have the technique, timing and physique to succeed in the English top flight?
The White Hart Lane faithful could be excused for dreaming about Milito despatching chances set up by Rafael van der Vaart in the style that Jermain Defoe used to do but has not of late. His arrival would put Peter Crouch's position in jeopardy - and almost certainly speed up the exit of Roman Pavlyuchenko, the Russian who continues to look the part one moment and a fish out of water the next.
But it could be argued that Arsenal's need is far greater. With Nicklas Bendtner not a player of the highest level and Marouane Chamakh having faded from the picture towards the end of his first season in English football, the onus is on Robin van Persie to supply the goals.
Milito's arrival would take the burden off the Dutchman's shoulders - and could even bring a trophy to the Emirates.
